A249 TRUNK ROAD TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS
Notice is hereby given that National Highways has made an Order on the A249 Trunk Road in the County of Kent, under Sections 14(1)(a) and 14(1)(c) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road.
The effect of the Order is, in phases, to authorise the overnight closure of:-
1. both carriageways of the A249 between Stockbury Roundabout and Sheerness Docks Roundabout, and all slip and link roads leading to and from this length;
2. the entire circulatory system at Cowstead Roundabout (A2500), Neatscourt Roundabout, Whiteway Roundabout and Sheerness Docks Roundabout;
3. access to and from any side road at junction with the lengths of carriageway described in 1 . above;
4. any bus stop or lay-by adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 1. above; and
5. any gap in the central reservation of the lengths of carriageway described in 1. above, and any dedicated lane used for the purpose of turning through them.  These measures are in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake maintenance and renewal work of a cyclical nature and A249 project works. The duration of each closure will vary depending on the nature of the maintenance work being undertaken on each occasion. The programme of works will start on or after 3rd January 2023. Overnight closures will be in operation between 20:00 and 06:00 (maximum period).
Planned maintenance work will be scheduled to avoid disruption during known peak periods, although essential maintenance may be necessary during these periods to prevent the need for emergency works. In such cases less disruptive options will be considered.
The Order will come into force on 2nd January 2023 and shall remain in force until 24th December 2023. Traffic affected by the closures will be diverted via other junctions of the A249 or by using the A250, B2005, B2006, Chestnut Street, Halfway Road, High Street, Maidstone Road, Queenborough Road and Sheppey Way. The diversion in operation will vary according to the closure in force, and the diversion roads listed above are the agreed routes, but these may change depending on local conditions. The temporary closures, overtaking bans and diversion routes will be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works periods.
