Batley: Bradford Road and Well Lane - Various Traffic Regulations
What is happening?
KIRKLEES COUNCIL
(TRAFFIC REGULATION) (NO. 02) ORDER 2026 BRADFORD ROAD & WELL LANE, BATLEY
The Council of the Borough of Kirklees propose to make the above Order under their powers in the Road Traffic RegulationAct 1984 the effect of which, as it affects lengths of road in the Batley area of the Kirklees district, will be to:
1. Prohibit entry onto Well Lane, Batley from its junction with Spa Street
2. Introduce a no right turn restriction from Bradford Road, Batley to Hick Lane, Batley
REASON: This scheme forms part of highway improvement works in Batley town centre to improve road safety and the operation of the local highway network. There are two elements, a right turn ban from Bradford Road into Hick Lane and a prohibition of entry on Well Lane from the Spa Street junction.
The proposal to introduce a prohibition of right turn from Bradford Road onto Hick Lane has been made in response to safety concerns at the junction of Hick Lane and Bradford Road. Vehicles turning right at this location must cross opposing traffic on Bradford Road, creating hazardous conditions and increasing the risk of collisions, particularly during peak periods when gaps in traffic are limited.
The prohibition of entry restriction on Well Lane will be made in conjunction with a future phase, which proposes pedestrianisation of Commercial Street.
As vehicles will no longer be able to access Commercial Street from Well Lane, the prohibition of entry restriction is required to ensure that traffic on this section of Well Lane flows away from the pedestrianised area, preventing vehicles from reaching a point of no exit and removing conflicting vehicle movements on the narrow carriageway. Opposing vehicle movements alongside parked vehicles would create hazardous conditions for both motorists and pedestrians, increasing the risk of collisions. The implementation of these changes is expected to increase road safety for road users.
