ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984

THE A232 GLA ROAD (LONDON BOROUGHS OF SUTTON, CROYDON AND BROMLEY, TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC AND STOPPING) ORDER 2026 

1. Transport for London in consultation with the London Borough of Sutton hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.

2. The purpose of the Order is to enable lighting works to take place on the A232 GLA Road – Croydon Road, Cheam Road, Carshalton Road, Wickham Road and High Street (Cheam) in the London Boroughs of Sutton, Croydon and Bromley.

3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:

(1) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Croydon Road between its junctions with Hillier’s Lane and Purley Way;

(2) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Plough Lane between its junctions with Croydon Road and Queenswood Avenue;

(3) entering or proceeding in a northerly direction on Plough Lane between its junctions with Stafford Road and Queenswood Avenue, local access will be maintained;

(4) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Croydon Road between its junctions with Hillier’s Lane and Manor Road/ Manor Road North;

(5) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on the Cheam Road between its junctions with St Dunstan’s Hill/ Belmont Rise and York Road/ Gander Green Lane, marshalled access will be maintain to Summerville Gardens;

(6) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on the High Street, Cheam between its junctions with The Broadway and St Dunstan’s Hill/ Belmont Rise, local access will be maintained between The Broadway and No.54 High Street, Cheam. Access will be marshalled for Park Road and Dallas Road;

(7) entering exiting, proceeding or stopping on Carshalton Road between its junctions with Park Hill/Pound Street and Chalk Pit Way;

(8) turning left from Throwley Way into Carshalton Road eastbound;

(9) stopping on Shirley Road between its junctions with Valley Walk and Eldon Avenue;

(10) entering or proceeding in an easterly direction on Wickham Road between its junction with Shirley Road and The Alders, local access will be maintained;

(11) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on the A232 Wickham Road/ High Street between its junctions with The Alders and Station Road, marshalled access will be maintained at the junction of Grosvenor Road and High Street

Works will be phased as such that not all restrictions may apply at any one time. 

The Order will be effective between the dates of 9th November 2026 and 9th November 2027 every night 9:00 PM to 5:00 AM or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibitions will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs. 

4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

5. At such times as the prohibitions are in force alternative routes will be indicated by traffic signs. For Croydon Road eastbound at Hillier’s Lane or for Croydon Road westbound from Purley Way northbound via Hilliers Lane, Beddington Lane, A236 Croydon Road, MitchamRoad and Purley Way or reverse to normal route of travel. For Croydon Road westbound from Purley Way southbound via Purley Way southbound, Russell Hill Road, Brighton Road, Purley Road, Banstead Road, Foxley Lane, Purley Way northbound, Mitcham Road, A236 Croydon Road, Beddington Lane and Hillier’s Lane to normal route of travel. For Croydon Road eastbound from Hilliers Lane southbound via Croydon Road westbound, Manor Road North, London Road, Carshalton Road, A236 Croydon Road, Mitcham
Road and Purley Way to normal route of travel. For Croydon Road from Plough Lane via Stafford Road eastbound. For closure between Manor Road and Hillier’s Lane via Manor Road North, London Road, Carshalton Road, Croydon Road, Beddington Lane and Hillier’s Lane or reverse to normal route of travel.
For Manor Road North southbound traffic via Acre Lane, High Street, Pound Street, Carshalton Road, Chalk Pit Way, Sutton Court Road, Grove Road, Sutton Park Road, Cheam Road, Carshalton Road, Pound Street, High Street and Acre Lane on to diversion route above to normal route of travel. For Hillier’s Lane southbound traffic for Croydon Road westbound via Croydon Road eastbound, Purley Way, Mitcham Road, A236 Croydon Road, Carshalton Road, London Road and Manor Road North to normal route of travel. For Cheam Road eastbound via Belmont Rise, Brighton Road and High Street to normal route of travel. For Cheam Road eastbound form Belmont Rise northbound via High Street westbound, Ewell Road, Cheam Road, roundabout at the junctions of Cheam Road/ Northey Avenue, Cheam Road northbound, Ewell Road and High Street to diversion route above to normal route of travel. For Cheam Road westbound via Cheam Road eastbound, Carshalton Road, Chalk Pit Way, Sutton Court Road, High Street, Brighton Road and Belmont Rise to normal route of travel. For High Street, Cheam Closure via Ewell Road, Cheam Road, Ewell Bypass, Reigate Road, Fir Tree Road, Brighton Road and Belmont Rise or reverse to normal route of travel. For High Street, Cheam westbound from Belmont Rise via Cheam Road eastbound, Carshalton Road, Chalk Pit Way, Sutton Court Road, Grove Road, Sutton Park Road and Cheam Road westbound to version route above to normal route of travel. For Carshalton Road closure via Chalk Pit Way, Sutton Court Road, Grove Road, Sutton Park Road, Cheam Road, Belmont Rise, Brighton Road, Bolters Lane, Winkworth Road, Croydon Lane, Woodmansterne Road, Beeches Avenue and Park Hill or reverse to normal route of travel. For Park Hill northbound traffic via Pound Street, High Street, Acre Lane, Park Lane, Ruskin Road, Carshalton Park Road and Beynon Road on to diversion route above to normal route of travel. For Wickham Road/ High Street closure via Upper Shirley Road, Shirley Hills Road, Gravel Hill, Kent Gate Way and Addington Road or reverse to normal route of travel. For High Street closure at Station Road via Station Road northbound, Beckenham Road, South Eden Park Road, roundabout at the junction of Links Way/ South Eden Park Road/ Monks Orchard Road, South Eden Park Road southbound, Beckenham Road and Station Road to diversion route above to normal route of travel.
