THE COUNCIL OF THE BOROUGH OF NORTH TYNESIDE

HOWARD STREET, NORTH SHIELDS
EXPERIMENTAL TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

North Tyneside Council gives notice that it has made an Experimental Traffic Regulation Order (Howard Street, North Shields) 2026 under Sections 1, 2, 9 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers. The effect of the Order will be to introduce:

A) No Waiting at any Time.
1) Howard Street, North Shields on both sides between its junctions with Saville Street and Northumberland Square.

The Order will come into force on 20 October 2026 for a period not exceeding 18 months, during which the Council will monitor its operation and determine whether the provisions should be made permanent.

As part of the experiment, the restrictions will initially be indicated by the installation of double yellow lines on:

• the east side of Howard Street from its junction with Saville Street in a northerly direction for a distance of approximately 47 metres; and

• tthe west side of Howard Street from its junction with Saville Street in a northerly direction for a distance of approximately 40 metres.

The remainder of the restrictions authorised by the Order will not initially be brought into operation. The Council will monitor the impact of the measures and, should evidence demonstrate that parking displacement is occurring elsewhere on Howard Street, may extend the physical implementation of the waiting restrictions to other parts of the road covered by the Experimental Order during the period of the experiment.

Objections to the provisions of this Experimental Traffic Regulation Order must be made in writing, specifying the grounds, to democraticsupport@northtyneside.gov.uk within six months of the date the order comes into force.
