What is happening?
THE A259 TRUNK ROAD (EAST OF RYE)
40 MILES PER HOUR AND 30 MILES PER HOUR SPEED LIMITS ORDER 2026
National Highways Limited(a) gives notice that they propose to make an Order under powers conferred by Sections 84(1)(a) and (2) of, and Paragraph 27 (1) of Schedule 9 to, the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 on the A259 Trunk Road in the District of Rother in the County of East Sussex.
The effect of the Regulation would be to impose: -
1. a 30mph speed limit on both carriageways of the A259 between a point approximately 35 metres east of the centreline its junction with King’s Avenue (east) (the existing 30mph to National Speed Limit transition) and a point approximately 160 metres east of the centreline of the afore-mentioned junction, a distance of approximately 125 metres; and
2. a 40mph speed limit on both carriageways of the A259 between a point approximately 160 metres east of the centreline of its junction with King’s Avenue (east) and a point approximately 318 metres east of the centreline of Star Lane level crossing; a distance of approximately 2700 metres. The Order would replace and revoke the following existing Temporary Order:
The A259 Trunk Road (Rye - Camber) (Temporary Restriction and Prohibition of Traffic) Order 2025 (b) ; A copy of the draft Order, plans illustrating the proposals, the orders being revoked, and a statement explaining why National Highways Limited proposes to make the Order may be inspected at: -
(i) Rye Library, 30 High Street Rye, East Sussex TN31 7JF Ask at Reception during normal library hours. (contact Hayley Kent) until the end of the consultation period, 23rd October 2026, being the legally required minimum period of 21 days from the date of this notice (2nd October 2026)

Any person desiring to object or make representations to National Highways’ proposal, should send, not later than 22nd October 2026, a written statement of his or her representation or objection and of the grounds thereof to the person and address at the bottom of this notice, quoting the reference NH/SE/2026/A259/RYE SPEEDS. Information provided in response to this consultation, including personal information, may be subject to publication or disclosure in accordance with the access to information regimes (these are primarily the Freedom of Information Act 2000 (FOIA), the Data Protection Act 2018 (DPA) and the Environmental Information Regulations 2004).
