What is happening?

THE BOROUGH COUNCIL OF GATESHEAD (BILL QUAY, GATESHEAD) (20MPH SPEED LIMIT ZONE) TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

Notice is hereby given that The Borough Council of Gateshead proposes to make an Order in exercise of its powers under Sections 1(1), 2(1) to (3), 4(2), 82, 83, 84 and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (“the Act”), by virtue of the Traffic Management Act 2004 and all other enabling powers and after consultation with the Chief Officer of Northumbria Police in accordance with Part III of Schedule 9 to the Act.

The proposed Order will introduce a 20mph Speed Limit Zone along the lengths of road set out in the Schedule below and will therefore:

i. amend The Borough Council of Gateshead (Bill Quay) Traffic Regulation Order 2015 to remove from Schedule 2 Part II the items relating to Bill Quay 20mph zone in their entirety;

ii. amend The Borough Council of Gateshead (Bill Quay) Traffic Regulation Order 2015 to revoke Part I in its entirety; and

iii. create a new Schedule titled ‘20mph Speed Limit Zone’ as set out below.

The draft Order together with plans and a statement of the Council’s reasons for proposing to make the Order may be viewed at the information desk on the ground floor of Gateshead Council’s Civic Centre, Regent Street, Gateshead, NE8 1HH, Monday to Thursday between 8.45am and 5.00pm and Friday between 8.45am and 4.30pm or online at: www.gateshead.gov.uk/trafficschemes.

If you wish to object to the proposed Order, you should send the grounds for your objection in writing to be received by the undersigned at the above address or by email to LegalTrafficOrders@gateshead.gov.uk on or before 02 November 2026.
