Great Aycliffe - Temporary Footpath Closure due to Bridge Replacement Works

What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (Public Rights of Way, Footpath Number 17 (Aycliffe Footbridge), Great Aycliffe Parish) (Temporary Footpath Closure) Order 2026

The Council on 28/9/2026 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all pedestrian traffic from proceeding on the following length of footpath. A 1.4 kilometre length of Footpath 17 Great Aycliffe Parish, from Ricknall Lane in a southerly direction across Aycliffe Footbridge to Millfields to enable bridge replacement works to be undertaken. An alternative route will be available to pedestrian traffic from the northern side of the closure, in an easterly direction along Ricknall Lane, then in a southerly direction on Heworth Lane (Mordon Bridleway No. 21), then in a south westerly direction on Embles Lane and then in a northerly direction on Monk’s End and Great Aycliffe Footpath No. 17, to the southern side of the closure and vice versa. The maximum duration of the Order is 6 months. The works commenced under urgent 21-day Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice on 9/9/2026 and now require extending from 30/9/2026 for approximately 6 months. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
