Torver - Temporary Speed Restrictions and Road Closures due to Utility Works
What is happening?
WESTMORLAND AND FURNESS COUNCIL
(RECTORY LANE AND THE A5084, TORVER)
(TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable utility works be carried out (“the Works”), Westmorland and Furness Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to;
1. Prohibit any vehicle from proceeding at speeds in excess of 40 miles per hour along the following sections of road in Torver;
(i) Rectory Lane, from a point approx. 60 metres north east of its junction with the A5084, extending in a north easterly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(ii) A5084, from its junction with Rectory Lane, extending in a north westerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(iii) A5084, from a point approx. 700 metres south of its junction with Rectory Lane, extending in an overall southerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(iv) A5084, from a point approx. 1.4 km south of its junction with Rectory Lane, extending in a south easterly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(v) A5084, from a point approx. 620 metres north east of its junction with the U5048, extending in a north westerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(vi) A5084, from a point approx. 380 metres north east of its junction with the U5048, extending in an overall northerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(vii) A5084, from its junction with the U5048, extending in a south westerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(viii) A5084, from a point approx. 230 metres south of its junction with the U5048, extending in a south westerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(ix) A5084, from a point approx. 980 metres south of its junction with the U5048 extending in an overall southerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(x) A5084, from a point approx. 300 metres north of its junction with the U5082, extending in a northerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
(xi) A5084, from its junction with the U5082, extending in a southerly direction for a distance of approx. 200 metres.
2. Prohibit any vehicle from proceeding at speeds in excess of 10 miles per hour along the following sections of road in Torver;
(i) Rectory Lane, from its junction with the A5084, extending in a north easterly direction for a distance of 65 metres.
(ii) A5084, from its junction with Rectory Lane, extending in an overall southerly direction for a distance of approx. 710 metres.
(iii) A5084, from a point approx. 830 metres north east of its junction with the U5048, extending in an overall north westerly direction for a distance of approx. 700 metres.
(iv) A5084, from its junction with the U5048, extending in a northeasterly direction for a distance of approx. 400 metres.
(v) A5084, from a point approx. 410 metres south west of its junction with the U5048, extending in an overall south westerly direction for a distance of approx. 780 metres.
(vi) A5084, from its junction with the U5082 extending in a northerly direction for approx. 530 metres.
N.B: The 10 miles per hour speed restriction will operate where contractor’s operatives and plant are working on site. It will be operated on a convoy system with a lead vehicle controlling traffic speed to protect the workforce.
No speed limit imposed by this Order will apply to vehicles falling within regulation 3(4) of the Road Traffic Exemptions (Special Forces) (Variation and Amendment) Regulations 2011 when used in accordance with regulation 3(5) of those Regulations.
3. Prohibit all traffic (i.e. vehicles, pedestrians and cyclists), from proceeding along the lengths of road specified in the attached Schedule, on the A5084 Torver.
Suitable diversion routes will be indicated on site by the display of relevant traffic signs as and when the temporary closures are in force.
Phased works will not necessarily be done in numerical order.
The contractor will ensure that local residents and the general public are informed of which roads are to be closed and when, nearer the time.

The Order will come into operation on 19th October 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required for 13 months and only as and when the relevant traffic signs are displayed.

SCHEDULE - EXTENT OF RESTRICTIONS AND ALTERNATIVE ROUTES
(i) From a point approx. 515 metres south of its junction with the U5042, extending in a south easterly direction for a distance of approx. 1.2 km.
(ii) From a point approx. 2 km south east of its junction with the U5042, extending in a south easterly direction for a distance of approx. 745 metres.
(iii) From its junction the U5048, extending in a south westerly direction for a distance of approx. 580 metres.
(iv) From a point approx. 310 metres north of its junction with the U5082, extending in an overall northerly direction for a distance of approx. 510 metres.
(v) From a point approx. 91 metres south east of its junction with the U5080, extending in a northerly direction for a distance of approx. 800 metres.
A suitable alternative route will be signed and made available as follows;
Alternative Route for North Bound Traffic: Via the unrestricted sections of the A5084, A5092 (Greenodd), A590 (Newby Bridge), A592, Rayrigg Road, A591, Ambleside Road, Lake Road, A5075 and the A593.
Alternative Route for South Bound Traffic: Via the unrestricted sections of the A5084, A593 (Coniston), Rothay Road, Kelsick Road, Lake Road, A591, Ambleside Road, Rayrigg Road, A592, A590 (Newby Bridge) and the A5093 (Greenodd).
