M4 And M5 Motorways - Temporary Restriction And Prohibition Of Traffic To Bridge Refurbishment
What is happening?

THE M4 AND M5 MOTORWAYS (ALMONDSBURY)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the M4 Motorway in South Gloucestershire to allow bridge refurbishment and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to take place commencing on or after 11 October 2026 and be completed by 20 February 2027.
The effect of the Order would be to:
(a) impose a mandatory 50 speed limit on the M4:
(i) eastbound from 1515 metres east of Hardy Lane overbridge to 250 metres west of the centre of Junction 20;
(ii) westbound from 1790 metres west of Old Gloucester Road overbridge to 300 metres east of the centre of Junction 20;
(iii) the eastbound and westbound exit slip roads at Junction 20;
(iv) the link road between the eastbound exit slip road at M4 Junction 20 and the M5 northbound entry slip road at Junction 15;
(v) the link road between the westbound exit slip road at M4 Junction 20 and the M5 southbound entry slip road at Junction 15;
(b) authorise the closure of:
(i) the eastbound and westbound exit slip roads at M4 Junction 20;
(ii) the link road from the M4 Junction 20 eastbound exit slip road to the M5 Junction 15 southbound entry slip road;
(iii) the link road between the M4 Junction 20 westbound exit slip road and the M5 Junction 15 northbound entry slip road
(iv) the link road from the M4 Junction 20 eastbound exit slip road to the M5 Junction 15 northbound entry slip road;
(v) the link road from the M4 Junction 20 westbound exit slip road to the M5 Junction 15 southbound entry slip road
There would also be hard shoulder running through the works.
During the closures traffic would be diverted via junctions of the M4, M5, M32 and local roads.
The speed limit (which would not apply to emergency service vehicles) width restrictions and closures would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works.
The Order would come into force on 9 October 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
