What is happening?
THE CITY OF SUNDERLAND (CLOSURE OF A690 DURHAM ROAD SUNDERLAND) (PHASE 2) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026
Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibiting all vehicular traffic along the A690 Durham Road, from its junction with Thorney Close and North Moor Lane. The Order is required to enable re-surfacing works on or near the road.
The Order will come into operation on 18th October 2026. The maximum duration of the closure under the Order will be 18 months, however it is estimated the closure will only be in operation for approximately 4 consecutive Sundays from the commencement of the works.
All vehicles will be prohibited from the above road (except vehicles involved in the works and emergency service vehicles on duty attending an emergency call) until the works are completed or at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs.
Alternative routes for southbound traffic via North Moor Lane, Silksworth Land and Silksworth Road.
A diversion for northbound traffic will be via Thorney Close Road, Telford Road and Grindon Lane.
