M5 Motorway - Temporary Restriction Of Traffic For Maintenance
What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTIONS 14(1)(a) AND 14(7)
THE M5 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 23 TO 24)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the M5 motorway in Somerset to enable cabling and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to take place on or after 5 October 2026 and be completed by 25 October 2026.
The effect of the Order will be to:
(a) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of:
(i) the M5 Motorway northbound between Junctions 24 and 23;
(ii) the M5 Motorway southbound between Junctions 23 and 24;
(iii) the southbound entry and northbound exit slip roads at M5 Junction 23;
(iv) the northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at M5 Junction 24;
(b) impose a mandatory 50 speed limit on:
(i) the M5 northbound from Junction 24 to 500 metres north of Bath Rd overbridge
(ii) the M5 southbound from Junction 23 to River Lane underbridge;
(iii) the northbound entry slip road at M5 Junction 24;
(iv) the southbound entry slip road at M5 Junction 23;
(c) prohibit vehicles over 3.25 metres wide from using the section of the M5 given at (b)(i) and (b)
(ii) above;
There would also be hard shoulder running through the works.
During the closures traffic will be diverted via junctions of the M5 and local roads.
The temporary mandatory speed limits (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles), closures, width restrictions, hard shoulder running, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works period and would only apply when traffic management measures are in place.
The Order would come into force on 3 October 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
