THE A303 TRUNK ROAD (CHESHAY’S HILL)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the A303 trunk road in the County of Somerset to allow geotechnical and associated maintenance works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to take place commencing on or after 5 October 2026 and be completed by 5 March 2027.
The effect of the Order would be to:
(a) impose a temporary mandatory 50 mph speed limit on the A303 eastbound and westbound between 850 metres east and 850 metres west of Cheshay’s Hill overbridge;
(b) prohibit overtaking on the A303 eastbound and westbound between 400 metres west and 750 metres east of Cheshay’s Hill overbridge;
(c) authorise the closure of the laybys adjacent to the A303 eastbound and westbound between 950 metres west and 850 metres east of Cheshay’s Hill overbridge;
(d) prohibit pedestrians and cyclists from the length of the A303 given at (a) above;
(e) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of the A303 eastbound and westbound between Southfields Roundabout and the junction with Broadway Hill.
During the closures, traffic would be diverted via junctions of the A303 and Local roads.
The closures (which would not apply to emergency services, traffic officer or works vehicles) speed limits, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works.
The Order would come into force on 5 October 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
