Cumberland - New & Consolidated Traffic Restrictions
What is happening?
CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS, ASPATRIA, SILLOTH, WIGTON AND SURROUNDING AREAS) (CONSOLIDATION AND PROVISION OF TRAFFIC REGULATIONS) ORDER 2026
1. Cumberland Council hereby give notice that on 8th September 2026 it made the above Order under Sections 1(1), 2(1) to (4), 19, 32, 35, 35A, 38, 45, 46, 47, 49, 51, 53 and 64 and Part IV of Schedule 9 to the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984.
2. The Order will come into operation on 18th September 2026 and its effect will be to consolidate, re-enact and revoke the “Cumberland Council (Various Roads, Aspatria, Silloth, Wigton and Surrounding Areas) (Consolidation and Provision of Traffic Regulations) Order 2024, and introduce the following additional restrictions: -
a) “No Waiting At Any Time Restrictions” (double yellow lines) on parts of the following: -
i) George Street, William Street, Proctors Square, Market Hill and South End, Wigton;
ii) West Street, Queen Street, St Mungo’s Park and Lawson Street, Aspatria; and
iii) Esk Street, Skiddaw Street, Eden Street/B5302, Silloth;
b) “Disc Parking, Waiting Limited to 1 hour, Return Prohibited within 1 hour, 8.00 am – 6.00 pm, Mon – Sat inclusive (Resident Permit Holders Exempt), on part Market Hill, Wigton;
c) “Disc Parking, Waiting Limited to 2 hours, Return Prohibited within 2 hours, 8.30 am – 6.00 pm, Mon – Sat inclusive” on part of West Street, Aspatria;
d) “No Loading/Unloading, At Any Time” on part of Queen Street, Aspatria;
e) “7.5 Tonnes Weight Restriction, Except for Access” on the following: -
i) C2046 and C2010 Blencogo;
ii) U2004 Easton;
iii) C2021 Aughertree;
iv) U2103 Torpenhow; and
v) U2029 and U2030 Causewayhead
f) “Disabled Badge Holders Parking Places, 8.30 am – 6.00 pm Mon – Sat inclusive, Waiting Limited to 3 Hours, Return Prohibited within 3 Hours” on part of Criffel Street, Silloth
g) “One-Way Traffic” on Skiddaw Street and Esk Street, Silloth, between the junctions with Raglan Court and Solway Street only; and
h) “No Stopping on ‘School Keep Clear’ Markings” on parts of the C2002 Westnewton; and King Street, Wigton.

3. Full details of the Order, together with a copy of the Order to be consolidated and revoked, and a plan showing the lengths of road concerned, and a statement of the Council's reasons for making the Order, may be viewed: -
(i) on the Council’s website using the following link: -
(ii) on deposit at Wigton Library, 28 High Street, Wigton CA7 9NJ;
(iii) on deposit at Aspatria Library, Market Square, Aspatria, Wigton CA7 3EZ;
(iv) on deposit at Cumbria House, 117 Botchergate, Carlisle, CA1 1RD; and may otherwise be obtained by emailing TROresponses@cumberland.gov.uk
4. If you wish to question the validity of the Order or of any provision contained in it on the grounds that it is not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 or on the grounds that any requirement of that Act or any instrument made there under has not been complied with in relation to the Order, you may within six weeks of 8th September 2026 apply to the High Court for this purpose.
