Heighington Lane - Temporary Road Closures due to Carriageway Resurfacing Works

What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (B6444 Heighington Lane, Spring Road and Long Tens Way, Aycliffe) (Temporary Road Closure) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road. A 940 metre length of B6444 Heighington Lane, between its junctions with Durham Way South / St Andrews Way Roundabout and the Roundabout to the west of Heighington Station; a 115 metre length of Spring Road, extending north from the Heighington Lane Roundabout and a 25 metre length of Long Tens Way, extending south from Heighington Lane Roundabout, Aycliffe to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to non-HGV vehicular traffic from the south eastern side of the closure, from B6444 St Andrews Way/Heighington Lane Roundabout, north on Durham Way South, east on Durham Way, north on Durham Way North, west and north on B6443 St Cuthberts Way, west on Horndale Avenue, south west on School Aycliffe Lane to the junction with B6444 Heighington Lane, to the western side of the closure, and vice versa.

A HGV diversion route will be signed from B6444 Heighington Lane, south and west on St Andrews Way, south on A167, south west on A1(M) from junction 59 to Junction 58 Burtree, north west on A68 and north on A6072 to the western side of the closure and vice versa.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are required from 8pm on Friday 25/9/2026 and for the duration of the works anticipated to be 10 nights, to 5am each following morning. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
