Chester-le-Street - Temporary Road Closures due to Carriageway Resurfacing Works

What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (Warkworth Drive, Readesdale Road, Embleton and Chillingham Drives, Chester-le-Street) (Temporary Road Closure) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road.

Phase 1: A 302 metre length of Warkworth Drive that extends southwards from the corner of No. 21 and 23 Readesdale Road, including a 10 metre length into the abutting junctions.

Phase 2: A 55 metre length of Readesdale Road, from its junction with Warkworth Drive to No. 2 Millfield Road and including a 15 metre length of Millfield Close, extending north from Readesdale Road to No. 3 Millfield Close.

Phase 3: A 12 metre length of Embleton Drive that extends west from its junction with Warkworth Drive.

Phase 4: A 17 metre length of Chillingham Drive that extends east from its junction with Warkworth Drive to enable phased carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from:

1. The northern side of the closure, north onto Waldridge Road then; a. west and south on the road leading to A167, then east on Embleton Drive to Warkworth Drive to the southern side of the closure and vice versa; b. east on Waldridge Road then south on Mendip Avenue, west on Grasmere Road and north west on Readesdale Drive, to the southern side of the closure and vice versa;

2. The eastern side of the Chillingham Drive closure, east onto Warkworth Drive then south, west and north to the western side of the closure and vice versa.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are required between 9am-3pm from Monday 28/9/2026 and for the duration of the works anticipated to be 9 days. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
