North Yorkshire & County Durham - Temporary Traffic Restrictions for Highway Works
What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE A1(M) MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 53 TO JUNCTION 59) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1(M) Motorway, the A66 Trunk Road, in County Durham and North Yorkshire, to enable vehicle restraint system renewal, sign replacement, tree cutting, general site clearance and carriageway resurfacing works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 8pm on Monday 5 October 2026 for 23 weeks, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be 24 hours a day, at times, during the works, to impose a temporary 50mph or 40mph speed restriction on the A1(M):
(i) northbound carriageway from 768 metres south of the exit slip road at Junction 56 (Barton Interchange) to the entry slip road at Junction 59 (Aycliffe Interchange), a distance of 16800 metres;
(ii) southbound carriageway from 30 metres north of the centre point of Lime Lane overbridge to 768 metres south of the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 16800 metres;
(iii) northbound and southbound exit and entry slip roads at Junction 56, Junction 58 (Burtree), Junction 59; and
(iv) northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at Junction 57 (Blackwell Spur);
It will be necessary to close, between 8pm and 6am, at times, during the works, the A1(M):
(v) northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 56 to the entry slip road at Junction 59, a distance of 15800 metres;
(vi) southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Junction 59 to the entry slip road at Junction 56, a distance of 15800 metres; and
(vii) slip roads as described above in (iii) and (iv).
It will also be necessary to close, for 24 hours a day starting at 8pm on Monday 5 October 2026, for the duration of the works, the laybys adjacent to the A66:
(viii) eastbound carriageway approximately 13800 metres west of Scotch Corner Roundabout; and
(ix) westbound carriageway approximately 555 metres east of Blands Corner Roundabout.
During the closures, suitably signed alternative routes will be available.
Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 4 October 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
THE A66 TRUNK ROAD (SMALLWAY TO ROKEBY) (TEMPORARY SPEED RESTRICTION)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited has made an Order on the A66 Trunk Road, in the Counties of North Yorkshire and County Durham, to enable lining and stud replacement works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 8pm on Monday 14 September 2026 for 11 nights, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:
(i) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66;
(a) eastbound carriageway from 400 metres west of Rokeby Junction, for a distance of 5490 metres; and
(b) westbound carriageway from 745 metres west of Dick Scott Lane East Junction for a distance of 6320 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A66;
(c) eastbound carriageway from 30 metres west of Rokeby Junction for a distance of 4800 metres; and
(d) westbound carriageway from 400 metres east of Smallway Junction for a distance of 4780 metres.
The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.
Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 13 September 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
