What is happening?

ORDER 2026

NOTICE is hereby given that Luton Borough Council, the Highway Authority for the said Borough, intends to make the above Order under the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended).

The Order will come into operation on 19th October 2026 for a period of 18 months or when the proposed works have been completed, whichever is the earlier. Specific dates and times will be signed locally. The Order will therefore be in operation during such date and time and to such extent as indicated by traffic signs, barriers or cones.

The effect of the Order will allow the Council to close to vehicular traffic Putteridge Road the whole length. Diversion route via Hitchin Road, Jansel House roundabout, Ashcroft Road, Green Lane. The closure will take place in phases:
Phase 1 closure will be a rolling road closure of the whole length of Putteridge Road. Anticipated dates and times of closures 19th October 2026 to 23rd October 2026, 9:30am to 3pm.
Phase 2 closure from its junction with Crowland Road to its junction with Selsey Drive. Anticipated dates and times of closures 24th October 2026 to 1st November 2026, 24 hours a day.
Phase 3 closure at its junction with Selsey Drive. Anticipated dates and times of closures 2nd November 2026 to 8th November 2026, 9:30am to 3pm.
Phase 4 closure of the whole length of Putteridge Road. Anticipated dates and times of closures 8th November 2026 to 12th November 2026, 8pm to 5am.

The Order is intended to create a window for the works to be done and it is anticipated that the works will be completed over the periods as described above. The purpose of the Order is to enable Volker Highways to carry out highway improvement, maintenance and traffic calming works including installation of road humps, installation of a Zebra crossing, and installation of raised tables. For the period of the closures, the Order will also provide for “No Waiting and No Loading” restrictions to apply within the road and lengths of road closed for said works. Any vehicle deemed to be in contravention of the restrictions will be issued with a penalty charge notice and removed. This will be in force when traffic signs, barriers or cones are displayed. Access will be maintained as best as possible to properties where this may be done safely whilst such works are being carried out and diversions for traffic where available will be marked by signs.
