What is happening?

CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE
(ST JAMES PARK AREA) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on 3rd September 2026 the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne made an Order under Section 14 (1) (b) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to prohibit any vehicular traffic to proceed on:
a) Strawberry Place from its junction with A189 Barrack Road to its junction with Leazes Park Road,
b) Leazes Park Road from its junction with Strawberry Place to its junction with B1307 Percy Street,
c) Strawberry Lane from its junction with Strawberry Place to its junction with St Andrews Street,
d) St Andrews Street from its junction with Strawberry Lane to its junction with Gallowgate,
e) West Back St James Street for its entire length,
f) St James Street for its entire length,
g) St James Terrace for its entire length,
h) Terrace Place from its junction with St James Street north-eastwards for 30 metres,
i) Leazes Terrace from its junction with St James Terrace north-westwards then north-eastwards for 200 metres,
j) A189 Barrack Road from Gallowgate to Stanhope Street, and
k) A189 Gallowgate from Barrack Road to St James Boulevard

2. The alternative route for traffic will be signed on site as required.

3. The Order is required because of the likelihood of danger to the public.

4. Exemptions will be provided for vehicles engaged in the said works and police, fire brigade and ambulance vehicles on emergency call.

5. The Order will come into operation on 6th September 2026 and be in effect at such times as appropriate traffic signs are in place, up to 30th May 2027.
