Workington - Footway Conversion to Shared Use & Segregated Cycle Track
What is happening?
CUMBERLAND COUNCIL
NOTICE OF INTENT TO CONVERT FOOTWAY TO SHARED USE FOOTWAY/CYCLETRACK AND TO SEGREGATED FOOTWAY/CYCLETRACK– U2650 CENTRAL WAY, WORKINGTON
1. Cumberland Council hereby gives notice that it is proposing to widen and convert part of the above footway to part shared use footway/cycletrack and part segregated footway/cycle track using the powers under Section 66(4) and Section 65(1) of the Highways Act 1980.
2. The shared use footway/cycletrack sections are located:
a) on the west side of Central Way, from a point 260m south of the junction with Central Square to a point 214m south of the junction with Central Square,
b) on the west side of Central Way, from a point 20m south of the junction with Central Square to a point 89m north of the junction with Central Square, and
c) on the east side of Central Way, from a point 94m north of the junction with Central Square to a point 114m north of the junction with Central Square.
3. The segregated footway/cycletrack is located:
a) On the west side of Central Way, from a point 214m south of the junction with Central Square to a point 208m south of the junction with Central Square.
b) On the west side of Central Way, from a point 203m south of the junction with Central Square to a point 20m south of the junction with Central Square.
The segregated sections link the shared use sections 2a and 2b described above.
4. The existing footways will be widened and converted to shared use footway/cycletrack and segregated footway/cycle track to a standard considered safe for use by the Department for Transport.
5. The segregated cycle track will be approximately 2.5m in width. The width of the shared use sections varies but will be not less than 3m in width.

7. If you wish to make representations regarding the above proposal, you should write to PO Box 415, Carlisle, CA1 9GU or by emailing TrafficTeam@cumberland.gov.uk quoting reference ‘CENTRAL WAY FOOTWAY CONVERSION’ not later than 24th September 2026.
