Merton & Sutton - Temporary Traffic Restrictions Due To Bus Lane Resurfacing Works

Public Notice - Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 - The A297 GLA Road (St Helier Road, London Boroughs of Merton and Sutton) - (Temporary Prohibition of Traffic and Stopping) Order 2026
1. Transport For London in consultation with THE LONDON BOROUGH OF MERTON hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above-named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.
2. The purpose of the Order is to enable bus lane improvement and resurfacing works to take place at A297 St Helier Avenue in the London Boroughs of Merton and Sutton.
3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle from:
(1) entering or proceeding in a northerly direction on St Helier Avenue between its junctions with Rose Hill Roundabout and Middleton Road;
(2) stopping on St Helier Avenue between its junctions with Rose Hill Roundabout and the roundabout at the junctions of St Helier Avenue/Morden Road/Central Road/Morden Hall;
(3) entering or proceeding in a northerly direction on St Helier Avenue between its junctions with Rose Hill Roundabout and Bristol Road, local access will be maintained between its junctions with Rose Hill Roundabout and Middleton Road;
(4) entering or proceeding in a southerly direction on St Helier Avenue between its junction with the roundabout at the junctions of St Helier Avenue/Morden Road/Central Road/Morden Hall and its junction with Middleton Road;
(5) stopping on Arbuthnot Road between its junctions with Boxley Road and Connaught Gardens;
(6) stopping on Boxley Road between its junctions with Arbuthnot Road and Morden Road;
(7) entering or proceeding in a southerly direction on St Helier Avenue between its junction with the roundabout at the junctions of St Helier Avenue/Morden Road/Central Road/Morden Hall and its junctions with Rose Hill Roundabout, local access will be maintained between its junction with the roundabout at the junctions of St Helier Avenue/Morden Road/Central Road/Morden Hall and its junction with Middleton Road;
(8) entering, exiting, proceeding or stopping on Connaught Gardens between its junctions with St Helier Avenue and Arbuthnot Road;
(9) entering Arbuthnot Road at its junction with Boxley Road;
The Order will also:
(10) suspend the crossing on St Helier Avenue outside Langdon Walk;
(11) suspend the crossing on St Helier Avenue outside Dore Gardens;
(12) permit two-way operation on Boxley Road between its junctions with Arbuthnot Road and Morden Road.
Works will be phased as such that not all restrictions may apply at any one time.
The Order will be effective between 12:01 AM on 14th September 2026 until 5:00 AM on 14th March 2027 or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibitions will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.
4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:
(1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;
(2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.
5. At such times as, the prohibitions are in force alternative routes will be indicated by traffic signs.
For St Helier Avenue northbound from Rose Hill Roundabout via Green Lane and Central Road to normal route of travel,
For St Helier Avenue northbound from Middleton Road via Middleton Road westbound, Green Lane and Central Road to normal route of travel
or via Middleton Road eastbound, Bishopsford Road, Rose Hill Roundabout, Green Lane and Central Road to normal route of travel.
For St Helier Avenue southbound from the roundabout at the junctions of St Helier Avenue/Morden Road/Central Road/Morden Hall via Central Road and Green Lane to normal route of travel.
