What is happening?

THE BOROUGH COUNCIL OF GATESHEAD
(GREAT NORTH RUN)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

Notice is hereby given that on 19 August 2026, the Borough Council of Gateshead in its own right and pursuant to arrangements made under Section 101 of the Local Government Act 1972 with South Tyneside Borough Council, made an Order in exercise of its powers under Section 16A of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended. 

The Order is required to enable the Great North Run (“the Event”) to take place and for the safety of spectators and persons and officials participating in the Event. 

The effect of the Order, which will come into force at 00:01 hours on 13 September 2026 and will remain in place until 23:59 hours on 13 September 2026, is to:-

i. Prohibit all vehicles from proceeding on the lengths of highway as set out in Part I of the Schedule to this Notice;

ii. Prohibit any vehicle to turn left from the junctions as set out in Part II of the Schedule to this Notice;

iii. Prohibit any vehicle to turn right from the junctions as set out in Part III of the Schedule to this Notice;

iv. Prohibit any vehicle to Wait, Load or Stop at Anytime on or in the lengths of highway as set out in Part IV of the Schedule to this Notice; and

v. Suspend existing provisions of Traffic Regulations Orders as set out in Part V of the Schedule to this Notice.

The alternative route for vehicles during the closure will be via the existing road systems in the vicinity of the affected highways and will be indicated by diversion signs. Exemptions in the Order permit use of the said highways by:-

i. Emergency service vehicles on duty;
ii. Authorised vehicles officiating in the Event; and
iii. Authorised buses and coaches associated with the Event.

The prohibitions will be in operation at such times as appropriate traffic signs are in place.

18. Coast Road (A183) south for 410 metres from its junction with Redwell Lane;

25. Church Bank for its entire length except for access to Jarrow Hall and St Paul’s Church from its junction with Jarrow Road (A185);

26. Newcastle Road (A194) northeastern carriageway from its junction with Hobson Way to its junction with Jarrow Road (A185);

27. Seafield Terrace from its junction with Ocean Road to its junction with Beach Road;

28. Shaftesbury Avenue from its junction with Amos Place to its junction A194 Newcastle Road.

4. Beach Road - Both sides - From its junction with Seaview Terrace eastwards for 180 metres;

5. Bents Park Road - Both sides - For its entire length;

6. Coast Road - West side - From its junction with Prince Edward Road East Roundabout southwards for 453 metres;

4. The prohibition of driving except pedal cycles on Newcastle Road, West Boldon - North side maximum 1.5-metre-wide lane adjacent to kerb for a distance of 64.5 metres in a south easterly direction from a point 134 metres east of its eastern junction with Abington Way;

5. The prohibition of driving except pedal cycles on St Georges Avenue, South Shields - from its junction with Cemetery Approach for a distance of 1.4 metres in a north westerly direction;
