A1 Trunk Road - Temporary Restriction Of Traffic For Works
What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE A1 TRUNK ROAD (SEATON BURN INTERCHANGE TO STANNINGTON INTERCHANGE) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A1 Trunk Road, in Northumberland, to enable surfacing works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start at 8pm on Wednesday 23 September 2026 for 11 weeks, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to impose a temporary:
(i) 40mph speed restriction on the A1 northbound carriageway from 850 metres south of the exit slip road at Seaton Burn Interchange (Junction 80) to the entry slip road at Stannington Interchange, a distance of 7350 metres;
(ii) 10mph speed restriction on the A1 northbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Seaton Burn Interchange to the entry slip road at Stannington Interchange, a distance of 6500 metres;
(iii) 40mph speed restriction on the A1 southbound carriageway from 850 metres north of the exit slip road at Stannington Interchange to the entry slip road at Seaton Burn Interchange, a distance of 7450 metres; and
(iv) 10mph speed restriction on the A1 southbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Stannington Interchange to the entry slip road at Seaton Burn Interchange, a distance of 6600 metres.
The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.
It will be necessary, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to;
(v) close the laybys adjacent to the A19 northbound carriageway approximately 1350 metres south of Seaton Burn roundabout(which will be used as an abnormal load holding area); A1 northbound carriageway approximately 445 metres north of Seven-mile Overbridge (Great North Road); A1 northbound carriageway approximately 630 metres north of Shotton Overbridge (Blagdon Lane); A1 southbound carriageway approximately 600 metres north of the exit slip road at Stannington Interchange (which will be used as an abnormal load holding area); A1 southbound carriageway approximately 600 metres north of the exit slip road at Shotton Interchange; and A1 southbound carriageway approximately 450 metres south of Shotton Overbridge (Blagdon Lane);
(vi) close the bus stop adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway approximately 310 metres north of the entry slip road at Blagdon Interchange; and
(vii) ban cyclists and pedestrians from the carriageway as described above in (ii) and (iv).
It will also be necessary, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to close the A1:
(viii) carriageway as described above in (ii) and (iv); and
(ix) northbound entry and southbound exit slip roads at Seaton Burn Interchange; northbound entry slip road at Blagdon Interchange (Great North Road); northbound exit slip road at Stannington (Old Road); northbound exit and southbound entry slip roads at Stannington Interchange; and southbound exit slip road at Shotton Interchange (Great North Road).
During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.
Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance, to anyone engaged in the said works, or traffic officer purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and properties which are accessible from, and only from, the A1.
The Order comes into force on 22 September 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
