West Sussex - Temporary Traffic Restrictions for Dale Hill Junction Realignment

A23 AND A27 TRUNK ROADS

(PATCHAM TO DALE HILL) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A23 Trunk Road in the County of West Sussex, under Section 14(1)(a) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road.

The effect of the Order would be to: -

(a) authorise the overnight closure of the A23 between Mill Road roundabout and Dale Hill Junction, and all roads leading to and from this length of carriageway;

(b) authorise the 24-hour closure of all lay-bys and bus stops adjacent to the length of carriageway in 1. Above;

(c) authorise the overnight closure of the shared used cycle track connecting from Pyecombe street footbridge to West Road roundabout at Dale Hill Junction (A281);

(d) authorise the overnight closure of the road leading to the eastbound carriageway of the A27 at Devils Dyke Interchange (A2038);

(e) authorise the 24-hour closure of the roads leading to and from the northbound carriageway of the A23 at Dale Hill Junction (A281);

(f) impose a 24-hour 50 mile per hour on the northbound carriageway of the A23 between a point approximately 600 metres south of the centreline of Pangdene Farm overbridge and a point approximately 60 metres east of Dale Hill Junction (A281) overbridge; and

(g) impose a 24-hour width restriction of 3.25 metres in lane 1 and 3.0 metres in lane 2 on the northbound carriageway of the A23 between a point approximately 240 metres north of the centreline of Pangdene Farm overbridge and a point approximately 990 metres west of the centreline of South Downs Way overbridge;

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake junction realignment at Dale Hill Junction and all associated works.

It is expected that the work would last for approximately 2 months starting on or after Monday 21st September 2026. The overnight closures will take place between 20:00 and 06:00.

The Order would come into force on the 19th September 2026 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months, ceasing when the works are complete.

Traffic affected by the closures would be diverted using the A23, the A24, the A27, the A259, the A272, and the A283.

The temporary closures, speed limits, width restriction and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in operation during the works period.
