A38 Trunk Road - Temporary Prohibition Of Traffic For Maintenance Works

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14(1)(a)

THE A38 TRUNK ROAD (MARLEY HEAD TO PEARTREE) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the A38 trunk road in the County of Devon to allow bridge joint and associated maintenance works to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to take place commencing on or after 1 September 2026 and be completed by 31 January 2027.

The effect of the Order would be:
(a) to impose a mandatory 50 mph speed limit on:
(i) the A38 westbound from 150 metres to 700 metres west of Peartree Cross Junction;

(ii) the A38 westbound from 200 metres east to 350 metres west of Dart Bridge Junction

(iii) the A38 eastbound from 500 metres west to 1050 metres east of the overbridge at Dean Prior Junction;

(iv) the westbound entry slip road at Peartree Junction; 

(v) the westbound entry slip road at Dart Bridge Junction; 

(vi) the eastbound exit slip road at Lower Dean Junction;

(b) to impose a mandatory 40 mph speed limit on:
(i) the A38 westbound from 700 metres to 4600 metres west of Peartree Cross Junction;

(ii) the A38 westbound from 350 metres to 2050 metres west of Dart Bridge Junction;

(iii) the A38 eastbound from 1050 metres to 3550 metres east of the overbridge at Dean Prior Junction;

(iv) the A38 eastbound from 1050 metres to 3150 metres east of the overbridge at Dean Prior Junction;

(v) the westbound entry and exit slip roads at Dart Bridge Junction;

(c) to prohibit vehicles over 2.9 metres in width from the A38 between Dart Bridge Junction and Lower Dean Junction;

(d) authorise the closure of the eastbound layby at Dean Prior Junction;

(e) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of:
(i) the A38 westbound from Dart Bridge Junction to Lower Dean Junction;

(ii) the A38 westbound from Peartree Cross Junction to Lower Dean Junction;

(iii) the A38 eastbound from Marley Head Junction to Dart Bridge Junction;

(iv) the westbound entry slip road at Peartree Junction; 

(v) the westbound entry and exit slip roads at Dart Bridge Junction;

(vi) the westbound exit slip road at Lower Dean Junction;

(vii) the eastbound entry slip road at Marley Head Junction;

(viii) the eastbound entry slip road at Drybridge Cross Junction;

(ix) the eastbound entry slip road at Dean Prior Junction;

(x) the eastbound exit slip road at Upper Dean Junction;

(xi) the eastbound exit slip road at Dart Bridge Junction.

During the closures, traffic would be diverted via junctions of the A38 and local roads.

Access to and from premises that are accessible from and only from the A38 would be maintained during the works.

The closures (which would not apply to emergency services, traffic officer or works vehicles) speed limits, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works.

The Order would come into force on 30 August 2026 and have a maximum duration of 18 months.
