NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an order on the A1 Trunk Road, in the county of Northumberland, to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be carried out in safety.

The work is expected to start at 20:00 on Friday 11th September 2026 for 13 weeks, or until completed.

The effect of the Order will be, between 20:00 and 06:00 hours, at times during the works, to:

(i) impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road carriageway from the A697 overbridge to 100 metres north of Earsdon Moor Junction, a distance of 5100 metres. The 10mph limit will only apply when, for safety reasons, when the traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle;

(ii) close the bus stop area adjacent to the A1 northbound carriageway approximately 75m north of Titlington Junction;

(iii) close the bus stop area adjacent to the A1 southbound carriageway approximately 150m north of Titlington Junction;

(iv) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A1 Trunk Road carriageway at Highlaws Junction, Hebron Junction and Low Espley Junction;

(v) ban vehicles from entering the northbound and southbound laybys at Titlington Junction, Fenrother Junction and Earsdon Moor Junction; and

(vi) impose an overtaking ban 420m north of the bullnose of the A697 northbound exit slip road to a point 100m north of the centre of Earsdon Moor Junction.

It will also be necessary to, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works:

(vii) close the laybys adjacent to lengths of carriageway as described in (i), including the laybys at Felton Lane Head Junction and Stannington interchange.

(viii) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A1 Trunk Road carriageway from 420 metres south of the A697 overbridge to 450 metres south of the Causey Park Junction, a distance of 7050 metres.

During the closures, suitable signed alternative routes will be available.

Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). Access will be maintained at all times to premises and property which are accessible from, and only from, the A1. The Order comes into force on 10 September 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
