What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (Public Rights of Way Footpath No.61 Esh Parish and No.67 Lanchester Parish (Blackburn Footbridge) Langley Park) (Temporary Footpath Closure) Order 2026

The Council on 6/8/2026 made the above Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all pedestrian traffic from proceeding on the following a 309 metre length of Footpath No.61 Esh Parish in a northerly direction from its junction with Footpath No.65 Esh Parish continuing northbound for 805 metres on Footpath No.67 Lanchester Parish to the junction with the A691 footpath to enable footbridge repair/renewal works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to pedestrian traffic from the junction of public footpath 61 and 65 Esh parish, heading west along Lanchester Valley Railway Path, then north on public footpath No.27 Lanchester parish, then east on A691, north on public footpath No.8 Lanchester parish, then east on public footpath No.7 Lanchester parish then north on bridleway No.9 Lanchester parish, southeast on Langley Lane to footpath No.5 Burnhope parish, and vice versa.

The maximum duration of the Order is 6 months. The works commenced under urgent 21 day Temporary Traffic Regulation Notice on 16/7/2026 and now require extending from 6/8/2026 for 6 months. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
