A38 Trunk Road - Temporary Prohibition Of Traffic For Bridge Maintenance Works

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTIONS 14(1)(a) and (7) and 15(2)

THE A38 TRUNK ROAD (BRANSTON TO FINDERN)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 9346363) intends to make an Order on the A38 Trunk Road, between Branston and Findern, in the Counties of Staffordshire and Derbyshire, to enable bridge maintenance works to be carried out. 

The effect of the Order, will be to, at different times –
(1) impose a speed restriction of 40 miles per hour on –
(a) the southbound carriageway of the A38 from a point 400 metres north of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the slip road leading from the roundabout junction with the B5008, the slip roads leading to and from the A38, and the slip roads leading to and from the A50, at Findern (Toyota Island), to a point XXX metres southwest of the centreline of the A5132 overbridge, at Egginton;

(b) the northbound carriageway of the A38 from a point 960 metres northeast of the tip of the nosing at its junction with the link road leading from the A5121, (Claymills Interchange), at Burton upon Trent, to a point XXX metres northeast of the centreline of the A5132 overbridge, at Egginton, and

(c) the entry slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the A38 from Toyota Island; and

(2) close –
(a) the southbound carriageway of the A38 from its junction with the exit slip road leading to Toyota Island, to its junction with the link road leading from Claymills Interchange;

(b) the northbound carriageway of the A38 from its junction with the exit slip road leading to its roundabout junction with the A5121 and Branston Road, at Branston (Branston Roundabout), to its junction with the entry slip road leading from Toyota Island;

(c) the link road leading to the northbound carriageway of the A38 from the A5121, at Claymills Interchange;

(d) the link road leading from the southbound carriageway of the A38 to the A5121, at Claymills Interchange;

(e) the entry slip road leading to the southbound carriageway of the A38 from Toyota Island;

(f) the entry slip road leading to the northbound carriageway from Branston Roundabout; and

(g) any layby adjacent to the lengths of the A38 described in (2)(a) and (b) above;

(3) prohibit any vehicle with an overall width exceeding 2.75 metres from entering or proceeding on lane 2 of –

(a) the northbound carriageway of the A38 from a point 350 metres southwest of the centreline of its junction with Church Road, to a point XXX metres northeast of the centreline of the A5132 overbridge, at Egginton; and

(b) the southbound carriageway of the A38 from a point 610 metres southwest of the centrepoint of Toyota Island, to a point XXX metres southwest of the centreline of the A5132 overbridge, at Egginton, and

(4) prohibit vehicles from entering or leaving the lengths of the A38 described in (2)(a) and (b) above at the junction with any side road.

The work is expected to start on Monday 21 September 2026 and continue for approximately two years. The closures will be carried out overnight between 20:00 hours and 06:00 hours. 

The speed restriction will be in operation from 20:00 hours on Monday 21 September 2026, for twenty-four hours per day, for the duration of the works. The layby closures will be in operation from 14:00 hours on Monday 21 September 2026, for twenty-four hours per day, for the duration of the works. 

The Order
will come into force on 14 September 2026 and will remain in force until completion of the work.

Vehicles being used for police, fire and rescue authority or ambulance purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction, closures and prohibitions. Vehicles being used for special forces purposes will be exempt from the speed restriction and vehicles being used in connection with the works or for winter maintenance purposes will be exempt from the closures and prohibitions. Access to properties will be maintained at all times.

Diversion routes via the A50, the A511 and the A5121 and vice versa will be signed.
