What is happening?

THE BOROUGH OF LUTON
(VARIOUS ROADS)
(TEMPORARY ROAD CLOSURES) (No.21) ORDER 2026

NOTICE is hereby given that Luton Borough Council, the Highway Authority for the said Borough, intends to make the above Order under the relevant provisions of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 (as amended).

The Order will come into operation on 1st September 2026 for a period of 18 months or when the proposed works have been completed, whichever is the earlier. Specific dates and times will be signed locally. The Order will therefore be in operation during such date and time and to such extent as indicated by traffic signs, barriers or cones.

The effect of the Order will allow the Council to close to vehicular traffic the following roads and lengths of roads:
Leamington Road the whole length. No diversion available. Anticipated date and times of closure 1st September 2026, 8am to 6pm.
Downlands the whole length. No diversion available. Anticipated date and times of closure 3rd September 2026, 8am to 6pm.
Sheridan Road the whole length. Diversion route via Argyll Avenue, Chaucer Road, Biscot Road. Alternatively, via Argyll Avenue, Biscot Road. Anticipated date and times of closure 4th September 2026, 8am to 6pm.
Bolingbroke Road the whole length. Diversion route via Whipperley Ring, Northdrift Way, Wilsden Avenue. Alternatively, via Wilsden Avenue, Farley Hill, Whipperley Way, Whipperley Ring. Anticipated date and times of closure 7th September 2026, 8am to 6pm.
Hawthorn Avenue the whole length. Diversion route via Putteridge Road, Green Lane. Alternatively, via Green Lane, Wigmore Lane, Ashcroft Road, Jansel House Roundabout, Putteridge Road. Anticipated date and times of closure 10th September 2026, 8am to 6pm.
Leagrave High Street from its junction with Mayne Avenue to its junction with M1 Bridge. Diversion route via Oakley Road, Humberstone Road, Dunstable Road, Lewsey Road. Alternatively, via Leagrave High Street, Poynters Road, Dunstable Road, Humberstone Road, Oakley Road. Anticipated date and times of closure 14th September 2026, 8pm to 5am.
Leagrave High Street from its junction with M1 Bridge to its junction with Lewsey Road. Diversion route via Oakley Road, Humberstone Road, Dunstable Road, Lewsey Road. Alternatively, via Leagrave High Street, Poynters Road, Dunstable Road, Humberstone Road, Oakley Road. Anticipated date and times of closure 14th September 2026, 8pm to 5am.
Lewsey Road the whole length. Diversion route via Leagrave High Street, Oakley Road, Dunstable Road. Alternatively, via Dunstable Road, Poynters Road, Leagrave High Street. Anticipated date and times of closure 21st September 2026, 8pm to 5am.

The Order is intended to create a window for the works to be done and it is anticipated that the works will be completed over a period as described above. The purpose of the Order is to enable Volker Highways to carry out carriageway resurfacing work. For the period of the closure, the Order will also provide for “No Waiting and No Loading” restrictions to apply within the roads and lengths of roads closed for said works. Any vehicle deemed to be in contravention of the restrictions will be issued with a penalty charge notice and removed. This will be in force when traffic signs, barriers or cones are displayed. Access will be maintained as best as possible to properties where this may be done safely whilst such works are being carried out and diversions for traffic where available will be marked by signs.
