The A23 GLA Road and Side Road (Brixton Hill and Holmewood Road, London Borough of Lambeth) (Temporary Prohibition of Traffic and Stopping) Order 2026

  1. Transport for London in consultation with the London Borough of Lambeth hereby gives notice that it intends to make the above named Traffic Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 for the purpose specified in paragraph 2. The effect of the Order is summarised in paragraph 3.
  2. The purpose of the Order is to enable construction of a new cycleway works to take place on A23 Brixton Hill.
  3. The effect of the Order will be to prohibit any vehicle:

    (1) from entering, exiting or proceeding on Holmewood Road between its junction with the A23 Brixton Hill and the extended western building line of No 227 Brixton Hill;

    (2) from entering or exiting the access road to No. 235 Brixton Hill (Brixton Hill URC Church) at its junction with the A23 Brixton Hill;

    (3) from entering or exiting the access road to No. 239 Brixton Hill at its junction with the A23 Brixton Hill;

    (4) from stopping on the western kerb-line of the A23 Brixton Hill between the extended northern building line of No. 260 Brixton Hill and its junction with Streatham Place;

    (5) from stopping on Holmewood Road between its junction with the A23 Brixton Hill and the extended western building line of No 227 Brixton Hill;

    (6) from turning right from the access road to No. 239 Brixton Hill onto the A23 Brixton Hill;

    (7) except buses from turning right from the A23 Brixton Hill onto the A205 Streatham Place;

    (8) from turning right from the A23 Brixton Hill onto the A205 Streatham Place;

    (9) except buses from turning right from the A23 Streatham Hill onto Christchurch Road;

    (10) from turning right from the A23 Streatham Hill onto Christchurch Road;

    The Order will also:

    (11) close the bi-directional cycle track on the eastern side of the A23 Brixton Hill between the extended southern building line of Nos.225 Brixton Hill and its junction with Christchurch Road;

    (12) close the bi-directional cycle track on the eastern side of the A23 Streatham Hill between its junctions with Christchurch Road and Tierney Road;

    (13) close the southbound bus lane on the A23 Brixton Hill between the extended common boundary of Nos.256 and 258 Brixton Hill and the extended common boundary of Nos. 235 and 237 Brixton Hill;

    (14) suspend the northbound bus lane on the A23 Streatham Hill between its junctions with Staplefield Close and Streatham Place.

    The Order will be effective at certain times between 7:00 AM on 1st September 2026 and 7:00 PM on 30th June 2027, or when the works have been completed whichever is the sooner. The prohibitions will apply only during such times and to such extent as shall from time to time be indicated by traffic signs.

  4. The prohibitions will not apply in respect of:

    (1) any vehicle being used for the purposes of those works or for fire brigade, ambulance or police purposes;

    (2) anything done with the permission or at the direction of a police constable in uniform or a person authorised by Transport for London.

  5. At such times as the prohibitions are in force an alternative route will be indicated by traffic signs for northbound pedal cyclists wanting Holmewood Road via Brixton Hill, Upper Tulse Hill, Fairview Place and Holmewood Gardens to normal route of travel. For southbound pedal cyclists only wanting Holmewood Road via Brixton Hill, Christchurch Road and Cotherstone Road to normal route of travel. For traffic in or wanting Holmewood Road via Brixton Hill, Upper Tulse Hill, Fairview Place and Holmewood Gardens to or in reverse to normal route of travel.
