What is happening?

(VARIOUS ROADS, CITY CENTRE, BRISTOL)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF USE BY VEHICLES) ORDER 2026
NOTICE is hereby given that the City Council of Bristol in pursuance of the provisions of section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended intend to make an Order the effect of which will be: -
1. to close, temporarily, to vehicles the lengths of roads specified in Schedule 1 to this Notice;
2. to suspend, temporarily, when appropriate signs are covered, the existing weight limit in Redcliffe Way (Bascule Bridge), so as to give effect to the alternative routes.
The Order is required because works are being or are proposed to be executed on or near the roads and will be operative from 24th August 2026 for a maximum period of 18 months. However, the restrictions may not be implemented for the whole of the period, but only as necessitated by the works (which are anticipated to take place overnight between 9:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. daily from 24th August 2026 to 31st August 2026).

SCHEDULE 1 – Temporary Prohibition of Use by Vehicles
1. Broad Quay – from Colston Avenue to Prince Street
2. Colston Avenue – from a point 90 metres south west of Rupert Street, south eastwards, then southwards to Broad Quay
3. Marsh Street – from Baldwin Street to Broad Quay
4. Prince Street – from Broad Quay to Middle Avenue
SCHEDULE 2 – Alternative Routes
1. & 2. Prince Street (part unaffected), The Grove, Redcliffe Way, Redcliff Street, Victoria Street, Bristol Bridge, Baldwin Street, St. Augustines Parade, Canons Road, Anchor Road, Jacobs Wells Roundabout, Anchor Road, Canons Road, St. Augustines Parade, Colston Avenue (part unaffected) and vice versa
3. & 4. Northbound: Prince Street (part unaffected), The Grove, Redcliffe Way (mini roundabout), Welsh Back, Little King Street, Queen Charlotte Street, Baldwin Street
Southbound:
Baldwin Street, Queen Charlotte Street, Crow Lane, Welsh Back, Redcliffe Way (mini roundabout), The Grove, Prince Street (part unaffected)
HGVs only:
Baldwin Street, Bristol Bridge, Victoria Street, Redcliff Street, Redcliffe Way, The Grove, Prince Street (part unaffected) and vice versa
