TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDERS 2026
Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make two Orders under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibit pedestrians along the footpaths in Schedule 1 and all traffic along the roads in Schedule 2. The Orders are required to enable the installation of cable works in or near the roads. The Orders will come into operation on 1st September 2026. The maximum duration of the closure under the Orders will be 6 months for the footpaths and 18 months for the roads and it is estimated that the closures will be in place for 6 months. All pedestrians will be prohibited from the footpaths (except personnel involved in the works) and all vehicles, cyclists and horse riders will be prohibited from the roads (except vehicles and machinery involved in the works), until the works are completed or at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. Vehicular access for affected residents will be provided when essential or in an emergency and when the works are not in operation. Pedestrian access to affected properties will maintained be throughout. An exemption for emergency services on duty and attending an emergency call shall be provided. Alternative routes will be provided via the adjacent highway network. Schedule 1 - Footpath Closures - all footpaths associated with Thackery Street, Dickens Street, Chaucer Street, Stevenson Street, for their entire lengths. Briar Avenue from its junction with Bernard Street North Back, for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction. Pine Avenue from its junction with Bernard Street North Back, for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction. Beech Avenue from its junction with Bernard Street North Back, for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction. Oak Avenue from its junction with Bernard Street North Back, for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction. Houghton Footpath 13 for its entire length. Scott Street from its junction with Burn Park Road, for a distance of 10 metres in a southerly direction. Schedule 2 Road Closures Burn Promenade, Bernard Street North Back, Stevenson Street, Chaucer Street, Bernard Shaw Street, Thackeray Street, Scotts Street, Violet Street, Thornhill Street North Back, Thornhill Street, Wallace Street East Back, Wallace Street, Bernard Street North Back, Bernard Street South Back, Gilpin Street, Greenwood Avenue, Dickens Street, Burn Lea, for their entire lengths. Oak Avenue, from its junction with Bernard Street North Back, for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction. Briar Avenue, from its junction with Bernard Street North Back, for a distance of 20 metres in a northerly direction.
