What is happening?
CITY OF NEWCASTLE UPON TYNE GREAT NORTH ROAD AREA
(i) (Bus Lanes) Traffic Regulation Order 2014 (Great North Road Variation) Order 2026
1. NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that on the 30th July 2026 the Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne made an Order under Sections 1, 2, 4, 19 and Part IV of Schedule 9 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 which amends the City of Newcastle upon Tyne (Bus Lanes) Traffic Regulation Order 2014 ("the 2014 Order").
2. The effect of the variation Order which will come into operation on the 14th September 2026 is to introduce Bus Lanes on the following lengths of road -
(a) Great North Road - northbound (nearside lane) - from a point 63 metres south of its junction with Forsyth Road in a northerly direction for a distance of 390 metres, and
(b) Great North Road - northbound (nearside lane) - from a point 30 metres north of its junction with Brunton Lane in a northerly direction for a distance of 800 metres.
The Bus Lanes will operate all days, 7am to 7pm. Only buses, taxis, motorcycles, pedal cycles and authorised vehicles will be allowed in the bus lanes during the times of operation.
(ii) Pedestrian Crossing - B1318
The Council of the City of Newcastle upon Tyne will also be proceeding with the establishment of a Puffin Crossing at B1318 - 15 metres north of its junction with High Gosforth Park in exercise of its powers under Section 23 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, details of which were advertised in the Journal newspaper on the 12th January 2026.

If you wish to question the validity of the above Order or of any of its provisions on the grounds that it or they are not within the powers conferred by the Act or that any relevant requirements have not been complied with in relation to the Order you may, within six weeks from the 30th July 2026, apply to the High Court for this purpose.
