M5 Motorway - Temporary Restriction Of Traffic For Maintenance

ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTIONS 14(1)(a) AND 14(7)

THE M5 MOTORWAY (JUNCTION 19 TO 22)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (a) intends to make an Order on the M5 motorway in North Somerset and the County of Somerset to enable bridge and parapet refurbishment and associated maintenance to be carried out in safety.

The works are expected to take place on or after 1 September 2026 and be completed by 20 December 2029.

The effect of the Order will be to:
(a) authorise the overnight (20.00 to 06.00) closure of:
(i) the M5 Motorway northbound between Junctions 22 and 20;

(ii) the M5 Motorway southbound between Junctions 19 and 22; 

(iii) the southbound entry slip road at M5 Junction 19;

(iv) the southbound entry and exit slip roads and the northbound exit slip road at M5 Junction 20;

(v) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at Junction 21;

(vi) the southbound exit and northbound entry slip roads at M5 Junction 22;

(vii) the northbound and southbound entry and exit slip roads at Sedgemore Service Area;

(b) Authorise the weekend (20.00 Friday to 06.00 Monday) closure of the southbound exit and northbound entry slip roads at Junction 21;

(c) impose a mandatory 50 speed limit on the M5 northbound and southbound between 960 metres south of the Wolvershill Road overbridge and 1050 metres north of Wick Road overbridge and the slip roads at Junction 21;

(d) authorise the operation of a contraflow on the M5:
(i) southbound from 170 metres north of Wolvershill Road overbridge to 3570 metres north of Wolvershill Road overbridge; 

(ii) northbound from 650 metres north of Wick Road overbridge to 2750 metres south of Wick Road overbridge;

(e) prohibit vehicles over 2.00 metres wide from using the middle and outside lanes of the M5 northbound and southbound between 300 metres south of Wolvershill Road overbridge and 1050 metres north of Wick Road overbridge;

There would also be hard shoulder running through the works.

During the closures traffic will be diverted via junctions of the M5 and local roads.

The temporary mandatory speed limits (which would not apply to emergency service or special forces vehicles), closures, contraflows, width restrictions, hard shoulder running, and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs throughout the works period and would only apply when traffic management measures are in place.

The Order would come into force on 30 August 2026.
