Sedgefield - Temporary Road Closure & Restrictions for Resurfacing Works

The County Council of Durham (A689 Beacon Lane, Sedgefield) (Temporary Road Closure, Contraflow, Prohibition of Turns and Speed Restriction) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit and restrict all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road in the manner described.

A. Road Closure (Closed to Vehicular Traffic)

1. A 2370 metre length of A689 eastbound dual carriageway from the crossover immediately west of the A689/A177 Roundabout to Beacon Farm, and including a section of Beacon Lane Roundabout between the A689 westbound exit junction to the A689 eastbound entry junction, and including all central reserve crossovers;
2. Saddler Drive, extending north from A689/A177 Roundabout for a distance up to 40 metres and
3. C38 Stockton Road for a distance of 230 metres, extending north from its junction with A689.

B. Contraflow for vehicular traffic

1. To prohibit the movement of vehicular traffic with contraflow over an approximate 2370 metre length of road, of A689 / immediately west of the Beacon Lane Roundabout to Beacon Farm, and including a section of Beacon Lane Roundabout between the A689 westbound exit junction to the A689 eastbound entry junction: a. No person shall cause or permit any vehicle to enter or proceed in one or more lanes of the eastbound carriageway of the length of road specified in Article B1 of this Order; b. Central reserve crossovers and farm access crossovers from both eastbound and westbound lanes of A689 to be closed and c. During the closure of the eastbound carriageway specified in Article B2, no person shall cause or permit any vehicle to: i) Enter or proceed in the offside lane of that opposing length of A689 westbound carriageway, as specified in Article 2a, other than in an easterly direction; ii) Overtake any vehicle in that length of westbound dual carriageway or iii) To make a U-turn in that length of westbound dual carriageway.
2. No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from making a right turn to and from the following junctions with the A689 A.177 northbound dual carriageway; b. Unc 44.9 Stockton Road; c. Unc 44.8 Beacon Lane and road leading to Donnewell Farm; d. Road leading to Cote Nook Farm; e. Road leading to Green Hill; f. Road leading to Beacon Hill Farm; g. Road leading to East Close Farm.

C. Speed Restrictions

a. 50 mph speed restriction: No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from driving at a speed in excess of 50 miles per hour on the following lengths of road:

i) A689 eastbound dual carriageway from a point 1130 metres west of circulatory road of the A689/A177 Roundabout, Sedgefield for 920 metres;

ii) A177 northbound carriageway from a point 1000 metres south of circulatory road of the A689/A177 Roundabout, Sedgefield and extending north for 924 metres and

iii) A689 westbound dual carriageway from 140 metres south west of the access to Tilery Cottage and extending west for 920 metres.

b. 40 mph Speed restriction: No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from driving at a speed in excess of 40 miles per hour on the following lengths of road:

i) A689 eastbound dual carriageway from a point 208 metres west of circulatory road of the A689/A177 Roundabout, Sedgefield and extending eastward for 400 metres to 195 metres north west of the access to Old Acres Bungalow;

ii) A177 northbound carriageway from a point 78 metres south of and extending north to the circulatory road of the A689/A177 Roundabout, Sedgefield and

iii) A689 westbound dual carriageway from 190 metres west of the central reservation crossover opposite Old Acres Bungalow and extending west for 4050 metres, to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic: from the southern / eastern side of the closure: from A689 westbound to and around Sands Hall (Racecourse) Roundabout and returning eastbound on A689 and the northern / western side of the closure: from A689 eastbound to and around the Wynyard roundabout and returning westbound on A689.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The restrictions are required from 15/8/2026 and for the duration of the works anticipated to be 9 days. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
