What is happening?

THE BOROUGH COUNCIL OF GATESHEAD
(PORTOBELLO, BIRTLEY – VARIOUS FOOTPATH CLOSURES)
TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026

Notice is hereby given that the Borough Council of Gateshead proposes to make an Order under section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 the effect of which will be to temporarily prohibit pedestrians and cyclists from proceeding along the routes set out in Schedule 1 below. 

The Order is required to facilitate inserting new pipework for water. 

The Order will come into force on 10 August 2026. The maximum duration of the Order will be 6 months in respect of the footpath closures, with works expected to be completed by 07 August 2027. 

During the works all pedestrians and cyclists will be prohibited from proceeding along the footpaths referred to in Schedule 1 until the works are completed or at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. During the works there will be a signed diversion in place.
