What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (B6298 New Road/Elliott Street and South Street/Croft Street, Crook) (Temporary One-way Restriction and Prohibition of Right Turn) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit and restrict all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road in the manner described.

One Way Restrictions: No person shall cause or permit any vehicle from travelling in a southerly direction on the B6298 Elliott Street/New Road from its junction with A690, for a distance of 80 metres and incorporating a no right turn from Queen Street onto Elliott Street and in an Easterly direction on Croft Street from its junction with B6298 onto South Street, for a distance of 45 metres and incorporating a no right turn from lower South Street onto Croft Street/South Street.

Prohibition of Right Turn: No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from turning right from Queen Street onto Elliott Street and from lower South Street onto Croft Street/South Street to enable new electricity cable installation works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from 1. The Northern side of the B6298 one-way restriction west on A690 Commercial Street and West Road, then south on A689 Peases Way and north east onto B6298, to the southern side of the restriction and 2. The western side of the Croft Street/South Street closure, north on B6298 Elliott Street then east on A690 Commercial Street and south onto South Street, to the eastern side of the restriction.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The works are required from Monday 10/8/2026 and for the duration of the works, anticipated to be phased over 19 days. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
