M20 MOTORWAY – JUNCTIONS 7 TO 9 TEMPORARY TRAFFIC RESTRICTIONS

Notice is hereby given that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the M20 Motorway in the County of Kent, under Sections 14(1)(a) and 14(7) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 because works are proposed to be executed on the road.

The effect of the Order would be to:-

1.authorise the overnight closure of –
(a) the coast-bound carriageway of the M20 between Junction 7 (A249) and Junction 9 (A20);
(b) the London-bound carriageway of the M20 between Junction 9 (A20) and Junction 8 (A20); and
(c) all the slip and link roads leading to and from the above lengths of carriageway.
2. impose a 24-hour mandatory 50 mph speed limit on –
(a) the coast-bound carriageway of the M20 between a point approximately 45 metres south-east of the centreline of Crismill Lane underbridge and a point approximately 1030 metres south-east of the centreline of the A20
underbridge (near Leeds Castle/Chegworth) and;
(b) the London-bound carriageway of the M20 between a point approximately 930 metres north-west of the centreline of Runham Lane
overbridge and a point approximately 165 metres north-west of the centreline of the A20 underbridge (near Leeds Castle/Chegworth);
(c) the hard shoulder adjacent to the lengths of carriageway described in 3. below above when used as a running lane; and
(d) all the slip and link roads leading to and from the M20 at Junction 8 (A20).
3. to permit, over periods of 24 hours, hard shoulder running adjacent to:-
(a) the coast-bound carriageway of the M20 between a point approximately 385 metres south-east of the centreline of Hospital Road underbridge and a point approximately 990 metres south-east of the centreline of the A20
underbridge (near Leeds Castle/Chegworth) and;
(b) the London-bound carriageway of the M20 between a point approximately 1030 metres north-west of the centreline of Fairbourne Lane overbridge and a point approximately 20 metres north-west of the centreline of the A20 underbridge (near Leeds Castle/Chegworth).

These measures would be in the interests of road safety while contractors undertake signalling, barrie and carriageway works and all associated activities to enhance the permanent Kent traffic congestion solution as required.

It is expected that the work would last for approximately 2 weeks starting on or after Monday 24th August 2026. Overnight closures would take place between 20:00 and 06:00.

Please check the National Highways website for details. The Order would come into force on 22nd August 2026 and have a maximum duration of eighteen months, ceasing when the works are complete.

Traffic affected by the closures would be diverted using other junctions on the M20, and by using the M2, A2, A28 and A249.

The temporary closures, speed restrictions, hard shoulder running and diversion routes would be clearly indicated by traffic signs when they are in
operation during the works period.
