What is happening?
THE CITY OF SUNDERLAND (COMMERCIAL ROAD) TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION ORDER 2026
Sunderland City Council gives notice that it intends to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, the effect of which is to temporarily prohibit all vehicle, cycle horse and pedestrian traffic from sections of Commercial Road. The Order is required to facilitate gas main works. The order will come into force on 1st September 2026. The maximum duration of the closure under the Order will be six months. All vehicles, horses, cyclists and pedestrians will be prohibited from Commercial Road from its junction with Spelter Works Road for a distance of 83 metres in a south-easterly direction, and pedestrians will be prohibited from those sections of carriageway and footways set out in the schedule, until the works are completed or at such times and to such extent as may from time to time be indicated by the display of traffic signs. An alternative route will be provided via the adjacent highways network.
SCHEDULE: Commercial Road - its east side, from its junction with Ocean Road for a distance of 29 metres in a north-westerly direction; Commercial Road - its west side, from a point 2 metres north of the extended north-western building line of 54 Commercial Road, for a distance of 16 metres in a north-easterly direction; and Commercial Road - its west side, from a point 2 metres south of the extended south-eastern property boundary of 207 Cairo Street for a distance of 22 metres in a southerly direction, then 18 metres in a north-easterly direction.
