Oxfordshire - Multiple Temporary Closures Due To Various Works
What is happening?

NOTICE is given that on 20 July 2026 Oxfordshire County Council made the above orders under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984. The effect of the orders, which come into force on 24 July as part of the Councils ‘Vision Zero’ (road safety) strategy – is to reduce speed limits on & adjacent to the A4074, between the Heyford Hill roundabout at Oxford & Mapledurham/Caversham to the south. Specifically the changes include the following:
A. Oxford, Heyford Hill:
• 40mph speed limit:
- A423 Southern Bypass – from the Heyford Hill roundabout, north-westwards, towards Kennington for a distance of 215 metres, replacing the existing 50mph speed limit in the process.
- A4142 Eastern Bypass – from the Heyford Hill roundabout, north-eastwards to the existing 30mph speed limit at the Rose Hill roundabout, replacing the existing 50mph speed limit in the process.
- A4074 – from the Heyford Hill roundabout, south-eastwards for a distance of 415 metres towards Nuneham, replacing the existing 50mph speed limit in the process.
B. Nuneham Courtenay to Berinsfield:
• 50mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the existing 20mph speed limit at Nuneham Courtenay, southwards (including the ‘Golden Balls’ roundabout) to the existing 40mph speed limit at Berinsfield.
C. Berinsfield to Shillingford:
• 50mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the existing 40mph speed limit at the Berinsfield roundabout, southwards to the existing 40mph speed limit at Shillingford, replacing the existing 60mph national speed limit in the process.
D. Shillingford to Benson:
• 50mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the existing 40mph speed limit at the Elm Bridge roundabout at Benson, north-westwards to the existing 30mph speed limit at Shillingford, replacing the existing 60mph national speed limit.
E. Benson to Crowmarsh:
• 40mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the existing 40mph speed limit at Benson, southwards to a its junction with Benson Lane, replacing the existing 50mph speed limit in the process.
• 50mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the proposed 40mph speed limit terminal at Benson Lane, southwards to the existing 30mph speed limit at the Crowmarsh roundabout, replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
F. Wallingford (Bypass):
• 50mph speed limit on the A4130 Wallingford Bypass – from the existing 40mph speed limit on Calvin Thomas Way at the Hithercroft roundabout, south-eastwards to its junction with the A4074, replacing the existing 60mph limit.
G. Wallingford to Ipsden:
• 50mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the existing 40mph limit at Crowmarsh Gifford, southwards to the proposed 40mph speed limit at Ipsden (north of Church Lane), replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
H. Ipsden to Woodcote:
• 40mph speed limit:
- Church Lane (Ipsden) – from its junction with the A4074, eastwards to the existing Ipsden 20mph speed limit, replacing the existing 60mph National Speed Limit (NSL) in the process.
- A4074 – either side of its junction with Church Lane (Ipsden), replacing the existing 60mph NSL (in process).
- B471 Oxford Road (Woodcote) – from its junction with the A4074, southwards to the existing 30mph speed limit, replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
• 50mph speed limit:
- A4074 – from the proposed 40mph speed limit south of Church Lane, southwards to the existing 50mph speed limit at Cane End, replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
- Exlade Street – from its junction with Main Street, south-eastwards to the existing 30mph speed limit at the residential part of Exlade Street, replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
- Main Street – from its junction with the A4074, north-eastwards to the existing 30mph speed limit at Checkendon, replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
- Reading Road – from its junction with the A4074, south-westwards to the existing 20mph speed limit at Woodcote, replacing the existing 60mph NSL in the process.
I. Cane End to Caversham:
• 40mph speed limit on the A4074 – from the existing 40mph speed limit at Cane End, southwards to the existing 30mph speed limit at Caversham, replacing the existing 50mph speed limit in the process.
As a result, the following Oxfordshire County Council orders will be revoked/replaced as necessary:
- (Oxford, A4142 and A423 Eastern and Southern Bypass and A4074 Sandford-On-Thames) (50 Mph Speed Limit) Order 2019;
- (Nuneham Courtenay) (20 Miles Per Hour Speed Limit) Order 2023;
- (Clifton Hampden Area) (Speed Limits) Order 2025;
- (Warborough – Dorchester Area) (Speed Limits) Order 2024;
- (Benson and Ewelme Area) (Speed Limits) (No.3) Order 2024;
- (Crowmarsh) (Speed Limits) Order 2023;
- (Wallingford 20 mph Speed Limit) (No.2) Order 2022;
- (Ipsden Parish) (20mph Speed Limit) Order 2023;
- (Checkendon Parish) (Speed Limits) Order 2019;
- (Restricted Roads) (Woodcote Parish) Order 2023; and
- the (A4074 Woodcote to Mapledurham Road) (40 and 50 Miles Per Hour Speed Limit) Order 2011.

NOTICE is given that Oxfordshire County Council proposes to make the above order under the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 and all other enabling powers. The order further amends the Oxfordshire County Council (Oxford City – Various Roads) (Map Based) (Prohibition and Restriction of Waiting and Permitted Parking) Order 2026 with the effect of removing Disabled Persons Parking Places (DPPPs) as shown in A below, providing new DPPPs as shown in B, and formalising advisory DPPPs as shown in C.
