Durham - Temporary Phased Road Closure & Speed Restrictions for Resurfacing Works
What is happening?
The County Council of Durham (A690, Belmont and Carrville) (Temporary Phased Road Closure, Prohibition of Right Turn and Speed Limit) Order 2026
The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road in the manner described.
Road Closure (Closed to vehicular traffic)
A 1530 metre length of A690 eastbound dual carriageway extending east from the C13 Broomside Lane off-slip road. A 480 metre length of C13 Broomside Lane, in a northerly and easterly direction only from the Broomside Lane to A690 westbound on-slip junction and a 285 metre length of A690 westbound dual carriageway, extending west for its junction with the Unclassified road 27.6 High Street, Carrville Junction.
Prohibition of Right Turn
No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from turning right from the High Street, Carrville and Belmont Park and Ride access road.
50 mph Speed Restriction
No person shall cause or permit any vehicular traffic from proceeding at a speed of 50 mph on a 1530 metre length of A690 eastbound dual carriageway, from the A690 to C13 splitter island at the off-slip and a 320 metre length of A690 eastbound on-slip road, from the dual carriageway commencement at C13 Broomside Lane overbridge.
It will also be necessary to suspend the restrictions contained in the County of Durham (The Grange Carrville) (Temporary Prohibition of Driving and Right Hand Turn) Order 1979 to enable phased carriageway resurfacing at A690/A1(M) Junction 62 Carrville Interchange works to be undertaken.
An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the Western side of the closure from A690 onto C13 Broomside Lane easterly, then north easterly on High Street, Carrville to A690 to the eastern side of the closure and the Eastern side of the closure from A690 south and south west on High Street, Carrville, west on C13 Broomside Lane to A690 to the western side of the closure.
The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months.
The proposed works are required from Wednesday 12/8/2026 and for the duration of the works, anticipated to be 18 nights between 8pm–6am per night. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
