What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (VARIOUS ROADS IN ST BEES, U4306 SCOTCH STREET, WHITEHAVEN AND U4270 GOLDSMITH ROAD, GOSFORTH) (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable gas main replacement works to be carried out (“the Works”), Cumberland Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the lengths of road specified in the attached Schedule.

Suitable diversion routes will be indicated on site by the display of relevant traffic signs as and when the temporary closures are in force. A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

Any queries to the Highways Hotline 0300 373 3736 or via the Cumberland Council website. The references to quote are detailed in the schedule.

The Order will come into operation on 10 August 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restrictions will only be required over a 5 month period from 10 August 2026 for the durations specified in the schedule, and only as and when the relevant traffic signs are displayed.

EXTENT OF RESTRICTIONS AND ALTERNATIVE ROUTES

1. U4306 Scotch Street, Whitehaven - Approx. duration 12 days (Ref: TTROC/17982)

From its junction with George Street, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 80m to its junction with Peter Street.

Alternative Route: via the surrounding streets of George Street, Queen Street, Vindmill Brow and Peter Street.

2. U4270 Goldsmith Road, Egremont - Approx. duration 19 days (Ref: TTROC/17506)

From its junction with Grove Road, extending in an overall northerly direction for approx. 50m.

Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of Goldsmith Road, Baybarrow Road/Southley Walk, Croadalla Avenue, Park View and High Lea and Grove Road.

3. C4007 Outrigg, St Bees - Approx. duration 12 days (Ref: TTROC/19023)

From its junction with the B5345 Egremont Road, extending in an overall easterly direction for approx. 70m.

Alternative Route: via the unrestricted section of the C5007 Outrigg, C4008 and B5345 Egremont Road.

4. U4126 Cross Hill, St Bees - Approx. duration 26 days (Ref: TTROC/19025)

From its junction with Main Street, extending in a north easterly direction for approx. 70m to its junction with Finkle Street.

Alternative Route: via Main Street, C4007 Outrigg, C4008, C4010, High House Road, Grindilla Place and Finkle Street.

5. B5345 Main Street, St Bees - Approx. duration 5 weeks (Ref: TTROC/19026)

From its junction with Abbey Road, extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 320m.

Alternative Route: via the unrestricted sections of the B5345, A595 Thornhill and Egremont and C4045 Mirehouse Road.

6. U4033 Scalebarrow, St Bees - Approx. duration 12 days (Ref: TTROC/19031)

From its junction with Abbey Road, extending in a north westerly direction for approx. 50m.

Alternative Routes: via the unrestricted section of Scalebarrow, Rottington Road, Byerstead Road, B5345 and Abbey Road.

7. U4035, Abbey Road, St Bees - Approx. duration 12 days (Ref: TTROC/19028)

From a point approx. 19m south west of its junction with B5345, extending in a south westerly direction for approx. 15m.

Alternative Route: via the B5345, Byerstead Road, Rottington Road and Scalebarrow.
