Tanfield Lea - Temporary Road Closure Due To Carriageway Resurfacing Works

What is happening?

The County Council of Durham (Unclassified road 12.28 New Front Street and Leith Gardens (back), Tanfield Lea) (Temporary Road Closure) Order 2026

The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit all vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road. A 360 metre length of Unclassified road 12.28 New Front Street that extends eastwards from B6173, and also a 73 metre length of Leith Gardens (back), Tanfield Lea to enable carriageway resurfacing works to be undertaken.

An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the western side of the closure from B6173, south to Stanley then north east on A6076, north west on C128 toward Tanfield, then south west toward Tanfield Lea and North Ind Estate to the eastern side of the closure, and vice versa.

The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are required from 7am on Monday 3/8/2026 and for the duration of the works anticipated to be 6 working days, between 7am-7pm per day (no closures over the weekend). On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
