THE A66 TRUNK ROAD (ELTON TO YARM ROAD) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an Order on the A66 Trunk Road, in County Durham to enable renewal and installation of vehicle restraint systems, carriageway surfacing and routine maintenance works to be carried out in safety.
The works are expected to start on Monday 10 August 2026 for 32 weeks, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works, to:
(i) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound carriageway from 2000 metres west of the exit slip road at Elton Junction to the entry slip road at Boathouse Junction, a distance of 5870 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 westbound carriageway from 1000 metres east of the exit slip road at Boathouse Junction to 1000 metres west of the entry slip road at Elton Junction, a distance of 6350 metres;
(iii) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound and westbound exit and entry slip roads at Yarm Road Junction and Elton Junction;
(iv) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 westbound entry slip road at Thornaby Road Interchange;
(v) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound exit and westbound exit and entry slip roads at Boathouse Junction;
(vi) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6'6" in specified lanes of the A66 eastbound carriageway from 500 metres west of the exit slip road at Elton Junction to the entry slip road at Boathouse Junction, a distance of 4680 metres;
(vii) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6'6" in specified lanes of the A66 westbound carriageway from 500 metres east of the exit slip road at Boathouse Junction to 500 metres west of the entry slip road at Elton Junction, a distance of 4780 metres;
(viii) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6'6" on the A66 eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads at Long Newton Junction;
(ix) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6'6" on the A66 eastbound and westbound exit and entry slip roads at Elton Junction and Yarm Road Junction;
(x) ban vehicles with an overall width exceeding 6'6" on the A66 eastbound exit and westbound entry slip roads at Boathouse Junction;
(xi) close the laybys adjacent to the A66 eastbound carriageway between Long Newton Junction and Boathouse Junction; and
(xii) close the laybys adjacent to the A66 westbound carriageway between Boathouse Junction and Long Newton Junction.
It will also be necessary, between 8pm and 6am, at times during the works, to:
(i) close the A66 eastbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Long Newton Junction to the entry slip road at Boathouse Junction, a distance of 7800 metres;
(ii) close the A66 westbound carriageway from the exit slip road at Boathouse Junction to the entry slip road at Long Newton Junction, a distance of 8160 metres;
(iii) close the A66 eastbound and westbound exit and entry slip roads at Elton and Yarm Road Junction;
(iv) close the A66 eastbound entry and westbound exit slip roads at Long Newton Junction;
(v) close the A66 eastbound exit and westbound entry slip roads at Boathouse Junction;
(vi) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A66 eastbound carriageway at its junctions with Back Lane and Sandy Leas Lane; and
(vii) ban vehicles from entering or leaving the A66 westbound carriageway at its junctions with Darlington Road.
During the closures suitably signed alternative routes will be available at all times.
Traffic management will be in force 24 hours a day and traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restrictions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes). The Order comes into force on 9 August 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
