Darlington - Temporary Traffic Restrictions & Road Closures for Resurfacing Works
What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 - SECTION 14
THE A66 TRUNK ROAD (BLACKWELL ROUNDABOUT TO NEASHAM ROUNDABOUT) (TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited intends to make an order on the A66 Trunk Road, in the county of Darlington, to enable carriageway resurfacing works, road marking and joint repairs to be carried out in safety.
The work is expected to start at 20:00 on Monday 3rd August 2026 for 5 months, or until completed.
The effect of the Order will be, between 20:00 and 06:00 hours, at times during the works, to:
(i) Close the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageway from Blands Corner Roundabout to Blackwell Bridge Roundabout including the circulatory carriageway at Blackwell Roundabout and Blands Corner Roundabout, a distance of 1000 metres;
(ii) Close the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from Blands Corner Roundabout to Neasham Road Roundabout, a distance of 2400 metres;
(iii) impose a temporary 10mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from a point 500 metres west of Blands Corner Roundabout eastwards for a distance of 1000 metres. The 10mph speed restriction will only apply when, for safety reasons, traffic has to be escorted through the works by a highway maintenance vehicle.
It will also be necessary to, for 24 hours a day, at times during the works:
(i) close the laybys adjacent to the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from 1350 metres west of Tornado Way Roundabout eastwards for a distance of 2700 metres;
(ii) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from 500 metres east of Neasham Road Roundabout to Blackwell Roundabout;
(iii) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the A66 eastbound and westbound carriageways from 500 metres west of Blackwell Roundabout eastwards for a distance of 1000 metres;
(iv) impose a temporary 40mph speed restriction on the circulatory carriageways at Blackwell Roundabout, Blands Corner Roundabout and Neasham Road Roundabout.
During the closures, suitable signed alternative routes will be available. When closing the roundabouts this will be done in halves and through the use of temporary traffic lights.
Traffic signs will indicate the extent of the restriction (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or special forces vehicles) and prohibitions (which will not apply to emergency service vehicles or vehicles being used in connection with the said works or for winter maintenance or traffic officer purposes.
The Order comes into force on 2nd August 2026 and has a maximum duration of eighteen months.
