What is happening?
ROAD TRAFFIC REGULATION ACT 1984 – SECTION 15
THE M6 MOTORWAY (JUNCTIONS 20-21A NORTHBOUND AND SOUTHBOUND CARRIAGEWAYS & SLIP ROADS)
(TEMPORARY RESTRICTION AND PROHIBITION OF TRAFFIC)
ORDER 2026
NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that National Highways Limited (Company No. 09346363) intends to make an Order on the M6 Motorway, in the Borough of Warrington in the County of Cheshire, to enable the replacement of bridge deck expansion joints at Thelwall and other general maintenance works; to be carried out in safety.
The Order will on the following sections of the M6 Motorway:
a)
i. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the northbound carriageway, from a point 275 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge, to a point 1,490 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge;
ii. impose a 40 mph speed limit on the northbound carriageway, from a point 1,490 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge, to a point 2,180 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge;
iii. impose a 50 mph speed limit on the southbound carriageway, from a point 425 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge, to a point 1,245 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge;
iv. impose a 40 mph speed limit on the southbound carriageway, from a point 1,245 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge, to a point 1,530 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge.
b)
i. ban all traffic from the northbound carriageway between J20 to J21, from a point 233 metres south of the Swineyard Bridge, to the northbound exit slip road at J21;
ii. ban all traffic from the southbound carriageway between J21a to J20, from a point 474 metres north of the M62 Bridge, to a point 150 metres north of the M56 Bridge;
iii. ban all traffic from the northbound exit slip road at J21;
iv. ban all traffic from the southbound entry slip road at J21;
v. ban all traffic from the northbound entry slip road at J20.
c)
i. allow the hard shoulders adjacent to the northbound carriageway, from a point 1,490 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge, to a point 2,180 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge;
ii. allow the hard shoulders adjacent to the southbound carriageway, from a point 2,368 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge, to a point 1,530 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge. A 40 mph speed limit will be in force on the hard shoulders when used as running lanes, as indicated by traffic signs.
d)
i. ban all traffic from the northbound carriageway, from a point 1,490 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge, to a point 2,180 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge. During the closure of the section of this northbound carriageway, the northbound traffic will be directed to cross over onto the southbound carriageway in a northerly direction in lane 5 where a contraflow system will be in place.
ii. ban all traffic from the southbound carriageway, from a point 1,750 metres south of A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge, to a point 1,530 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge. During the closure of the section of this southbound carriageway, the southbound traffic will be directed to cross over onto the northbound carriageway in a southerly direction in lane 5 where a contraflow system will be in place.
e)
i. impose a width restriction of 2.00 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in lanes 3 and 4 on the northbound carriageway, from a point 1,490 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge, to a point 2,180 metres south of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge;
ii. impose a width restriction of 2.00 metres (6 feet 6 inches) in lanes 3 and 4 on the southbound carriageway, from a point 1,750 metres north of the A574 Birchwood Way Southern Bridge, to a point 1,530 metres north of the Lymm Interchange Bridge.
Restrictions a), c) and e) and Prohibitions b) iii.-v. and d) are expected to be in place during a continuous period, subject to traffic signs, starting at 20:00 on Saturday 1 August 2026 and ending at 06:00 on Monday 31 July 2028.
Prohibitions b) i.-ii. are expected to be in place overnight, subject to traffic signs, between 20:00 and 06:00 (07:00 on Saturday and Sunday mornings) during a period starting on Saturday 1 August 2026 and ending on Monday 31 July 2028.
Diversion routes via alternative junctions of the M6 Motorway, and local roads will be well signed.
The restrictions will not apply to emergency services or special-forces vehicles, and the prohibitions will not apply to emergency services, works, or traffic officer vehicles. The restrictions and prohibitions will only apply during such times and to such extent as shall be indicated by traffic signs. The Order comes into force on 31 July 2026 and is valid until 31 July 2028. National Highways is satisfied that the execution of the works will take longer than a period of 18 months.
