What is happening?
CITY OF BRISTOL
VARIOUS ROADS, CITY CENTRE AND STOKES CROFT AREA – ONE WAY TRAFFIC, PARKING PLACES AND WAITING PROHIBITIONS/RESTRICTIONS – TRAFFIC ORDERS
The City Council of Bristol hereby gives NOTICE that on 9th July 2026 it made the following traffic orders:-
A. The City Council of Bristol (Central Zone, Ashley, Central and Lawrence Hill Wards, City of Bristol) (Controlled Parking) Order 2026, the effect of which is:-
1. to introduce a loading place in Silver Street, west side;
2. to revise the operating times of the loading place in St. Augustine’s Parade, west side, to operate from 6 am until midday;
3. to introduce disabled persons’ parking places in Bridewell Street, Castle Street and Silver Street;
4. to introduce a Car Club parking place in Bridewell Street, east side, and reduce the extent of the police parking place at that location;
5. to remove pay and display parking places in Castle Street and Silver Street;
6. to revise prohibition of loading/unloading for vehicles in Bond Street South and Bridewell Street; and
7. to revise restriction of waiting arrangements for vehicles in St. Augustine’s Parade.
This Order gives effect only to part of the original Order as proposed (published 27th November 2025 – Ref. CAE/RGW/P- 1338B) and is made by virtue of Regulation 19 of the Local Authorities’ Traffic Orders (Procedure) (England and Wales) Regulations 1996.
A decision will be taken as to whether a further order will be made giving effect to the remaining measures proposed in the original order in due course in relation to proposed:-
(i) removal of a pay and display parking place in Fairfax Street, south west side; and
(ii) introduction of a prohibition of loading/unloading in Fairfax Street, both sides.
The purpose of the above measures was also, in part, to facilitate:-
(a) the amendment of formal provision for the waiting of hackney carriages in St. Augustine’s Parade, west side at its junction with Colston Street, from operating between the hours of 4 pm and 8 am to operate between the hours of midday and 6am; and
(b) the introduction of formal provision for the waiting of hackney carriages in Bond Street South, west side south of Bond Street, to operate at any time.
To that end the Council further gives notice that it appointed the locations being amended and introduced as stands for hackney carriages pursuant to its powers under Section 63 of the Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976 as amended.
B. The City Council of Bristol (Bridewell Street, Central Ward, City of Bristol) (One Way Traffic) Order 2026, the effect of which is to introduce southbound one way traffic in Bridewell Street, from Rupert Street to Nelson Street.
The orders will come into operation on 13th July 2026 and copies thereof, together with plans, copies of the orders being varied and revoked, and a Statement of the Council’s Reasons for making the orders may be inspected at the Citizen Service Point at 100 Temple Street, Bristol, BS1 6AG, between 10.00 a.m. and 4.00 p.m. on Monday to Friday.
Any person who desires to question the validity of, or of any provision contained in the order on the grounds that it is not within the relevant powers of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, or on the grounds that any of the relevant requirements of that Act has not been complied with in relation to the order, may within six weeks after the date on which the order was made, apply to the High Court for this purpose.
