What is happening?

SUFFOLK COUNTY COUNCIL (PARISHES OF BENTLEY, COPDOCK AND WASHBROOK (BENTLEY HALL ROAD) (C456) (CHURCH ROAD) (C425) (SWAN HILL) (C495) (PROHIBITION OF HEAVY COMMERCIAL VEHICLES) ORDER 2026

On 29/06/2026 Suffolk County Council made the above order under Sections 1(1), 2(1) to (4) and 3(2) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 the effect of which is to introduce a prohibition of heavy commercial vehicles on the following roads:

Bentley Hall Road (C456) on both sides starting at the junction with the A12 and continuing until it reaches the junction of Church Road (C425) near Bentley Hall Cottages for a distance of 2189 metres. The restriction then continues in a northerly then easterly direction along Church Road (C425) until it reaches the A137, a distance of 1380 metres

Church Road (C425) on both sides, starting at the junction with Station Road (C426) going northerly to Bentley Hall Road (C456) for approximately distance of 1770 metres

Swan Hill (C495) northbound, starting at the junction with The Street (C467) to the junction roundabout joining the A1071 and the B1113 (Beagle roundabout) for a total distance of approximately 1382 metres.

Exemptions to the restrictions shall allow a heavy commercial vehicle to enter the road for or in connection with the conveyance of goods to or from any premises situated on or adjacent to; the said lengths of road; or any side road accessible only from the said lengths of road. Also, for the purposes of agriculture on any land adjacent to the said lengths of road or in connection with the conveyance or haulage of timber felled upon such land. Furthermore, in connection with the carrying out on, or on premises situated on or adjacent to, the said lengths of road of any of the following operations, namely: building, industrial or demolition operations; the removal of any obstruction to traffic; the maintenance, improvement or reconstruction of the said length of road; and the laying, erection, alteration or repair in, or on land adjacent to the said lengths of road, of any sewer or any main, pipe or apparatus for the supply of water, gas or electricity or any telecommunications system as defined in the Telecommunications Act 1984. Also, exemptions shall apply to allow vehicles to proceed to or from any premises which are situated in or adjacent to the said lengths of road and at which the vehicle is to be, or has been, garaged, serviced or repaired; in the service of a local authority or water authority in pursuance of statutory powers or duties; or in connection with a circus, fair or smaller event the holding of which on, or in the vicinity of, the said lengths of road has been authorised by the appropriate council.

A copy of the order, which comes into effect on 10/07/2026, may be seen with advance notice at the address below, 9am - 5pm Monday - Friday; also at Ipswich County Library, Northgate Street, Ipswich IP1 3DE, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday: 9am - 6pm, Tuesday and Friday: 9am - 7pm, Saturday: 8.30am - 5pm, Sunday: 10am - 4pm.

If anyone wishes to question the validity of the order or of any provision contained in it on the grounds that it is not within the powers conferred by the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984, as amended, or on the grounds that any of the requirements of that act or any instrument made under it have not been complied with in relation to the order, they may within six weeks of the date on which the order was made apply to the High Court for this purpose.
