What is happening?

CUMBERLAND COUNCIL (JAMES STREET AND NELSON BRIDGE, CARLISLE) (LANE CLOSURES) (TEMPORARY TRAFFIC REGULATION) ORDER 2026

NOTICE IS HEREBY GIVEN that to enable works to be carried for the replacement of barriers in the footway on James Street, Carlisle (“the Works”), Cumberland Council intends to make an Order the effect of which is to:

1. Prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the southbound carriageway of James Street, Carlisle, from its junction with Victoria Viaduct, extending in a south easterly direction for approx. 140m; and

2. Prohibit any vehicle from proceeding along the right hand filter lane only, of Nelson Bridge from its junction with Denton Street to its junction with James Street.

N.B During the restriction detailed in 2 above vehicles will be filtered into the left hand lane leading to Victoria Viaduct and Viaduct Estate Road and temporary traffic lights will be operational at the junction of James Street and Victoria Viaduct to regulate the flow of traffic whilst the temporary restrictions are in place.

South Bound Vehicles and vehicles wishing to access James Street from Victoria Viaduct, Nelson Bridge and Viaduct Estate Road should proceed along the surrounding roads of Victoria Viaduct, Devonshire Street, Lowther Street, Victoria Place, Spencer Street, Warwick Road, The Crescent, Botchergate, St Nicholas Street, Blackwell Road, Currock Road, Currock Street and James Street, as appropriate.

A way for pedestrians and dismounted cyclists will be maintained at all times.

The Order will come into operation on 24 July 2026 and may continue in force for a maximum duration of eighteen months. However, please note that it is anticipated that the restriction will only be required for 1 day between 0900 and 1500 hours, and only as and when the appropriate traffic signs are displayed.
