CITY OF BRISTOL
(VARIOUS ROADS, CITY CENTRE, BRISTOL) (TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF USE BY VEHICLES)
(TEMPORARY PROHIBITION OF USE BY EXEMPT VEHICLES) (TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF CYCLE LANE) (TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF ONE WAY TRAFFIC) (TEMPORARY SUSPENSION OF PROHIBITION OF RIGHT TURN) ORDER 2026
NOTICE is hereby given that the City Council of Bristol in pursuance of the provisions of section 14 of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended intend to make an Order the effect of which will be:
1. to close, temporarily, to vehicles the lengths of roads specified in Schedule 1 to this Notice;
2. to close, temporarily, to vehicles exempted from the existing prohibition of driving in Lower Maudlin Street, the lengths of road specified in Schedule 2 to this Notice;
3. to suspend, temporarily, when appropriate signs are covered, that length of cycle lane specified in Schedule 3 to this Notice;
4. to suspend, temporarily, when appropriate signs are covered:-
(a) the existing one way traffic working in:-
(i) a north westerly direction in Lower Maudlin Street;
(ii) a south easterly direction in Penn Street;
(iii) a generally north easterly, then south easterly direction in The Horsefair; and
(iv) a south easterly, then southerly direction in Whitson Street;
(b) the existing reserved bus lane working in a westerly direction in Union Street; and
(c) the existing prohibition of right turn from Colston Avenue into Christmas Street – so as to give effect to the alternative routes and allow access and egress for vehicles.
Note: Bus access will be maintained for Marlborough Street in Phase 8 of Schedule 1 to this Notice. Limited access will be maintained where possible by onsite marshals for Phases 5, 8 (Marlborough Street only) and 9 of Schedule 1 to this Notice.
The Order is required because works are being or are proposed to be executed on or near the roads and will be operative from 20th July 2026 for a maximum period of 18 months. However, the restrictions may not be implemented for the whole of the period, but only as necessitated by the works (which are anticipated to take place in 9 consecutive phases between 20th July 2026 and 31st March 2027).
In addition, the closure of lengths of roads specified in Schedule 1 to this Notice which also provide part of an alternative route (as specified in Schedule 4 to this Notice) will be managed so as to allow the provision of the alternative routes whilst facilitating the works programme.
