Chrch Street - Temporary One-Way & Turning Restrictions for Footway Refurbishment Works
What is happening?
The County Council of Durham (C98 Church Street, Durham City) (Temporary Prohibition of Driving, No Left Turn and No Right Turn) Order 2026
The Council proposes to make an Order under Section 14(1) of the Road Traffic Regulation Act 1984 as amended, to prohibit vehicular traffic from proceeding on the following lengths of road in the manner described.
Prohibition of driving: In a south westbound direction on C98 Church Street, between its junctions with New Elvet and A177 Stockton Road; in northbound direction on Hallgarth Street, between its junctions with A177 Stockton Road and New Elvet and in an easterly direction on Quarryheads Lane, between Potters Bank Roundabout and the “New Inn” A177 South Road traffic signalled junction, Durham.
(The above restrictions will impose the following)
No Left Turn: From Boyd Street and Oswald Court onto Church Street; from High Yard and Back Mount Joy (Hallgarth Nursing Home on Hallgarth Street and from properties on the northern side of Quarryheads Lane.
No Right Turn: From The Anchorage, rear Anchorage Terrace and side No. 28/28b Church Street onto Church Street; from Elvet House/County Court, Mavin Street, the road between Whinney Hill and Church Street onto Hallgarth Street and from the properties on the southern side of Quarryheads Lane.
The one-way restrictions and associated turning restrictions are necessary to enable a footway refurbishment scheme to be undertaken.
An alternative route will be available to vehicular traffic from the north eastern side of the restriction from New Elvet south on Hallgarth Street then west on A177 Stockton Road to the south western side of the restriction, and from A177 Stockton road west then north on Church Street onto New Elvet to either north east on Elvet Crescent, west on Court Lane and south to Hallgarth Street, or north to and around A690 Leazes Bowl Roundabout and south on New Elvet to Hallgarth Street.
The maximum duration of the Order is 18 months. The proposed works are required from Monday 20/7/2026 and the duration of the works are anticipated to be around 9 weeks. On occasions, alternative dates for the closure may be necessary and these will be signed on site accordingly.
